what is the name for the bar circled in this pic? I went to get an alignment and they showed me that that bar could be moved freely while jacked up. They told me theres a bushing that could use replacing but would be best to just replace the whole bar since it would come with bushing installed.

the technical name is "Rear Lateral Link"

for the protege5, the part number is B30P-28-620A

it would probably be best to replace both left and right sides, as then the bushings will be the same and your handle wont feel 'wonkie' in the rear.

Good luck with the install. The big bolt that goes through the knuckle will be a b**** to get out. I have one that I need to replace. I tried it on my own and couldn't get that bolt off.

I wrecked my mp3 last december and unfortunaly bent that bar. Got a new one from the dealership for 65 bucks. +1 on being a b**** to replace. I had to take the entire knuckle off and take it to machine shop to have that bolt pressed out. they hard to use a 12 ton press to get it out.

I got the nut off as displayed in pic 2, but now what? Do i need to turn the head in pic 1? or do i need to hammer out the bolt?

First step should be ordering new bolt(s) to replace those since you will destroy it(them).

Next, get a torch and some penetrating spray like PB Blaster. Spay the knuckle as much as possible where the bolt goes through. Use the torch to help the penetrating spray further "penetrate". Remember that the penetrating spray will go toward the heat.

Are you replacing bolt lateral links? You might have to because the torch will probably fry the bushings.

Once you think you have enough penetrating oil, try to turn the bolt. An impact gun would be worth its weight in gold here. If it doesn't, more heat and penetrating oil. If that doesn't work and you don't have an impact gun, use a 3 lb sledge hammer to pound the bolt out (this is where you destroy the bolt).

While removing a similar bolt from the rear suspension of my Saturn, I ran into this same problem. Many hours later of torching, pounding and cussing, I finally got the bolts out.

Good luck. Keep us posted on how it goes for you.

what about for the mp3?

one more question. is the front and rear lateral links different? the top bar in the pic has the shorter bushing and the bar is also shorter than the bottom bar. i looked at my car and the front links match the shorter bar and the rear match the longer bar. i just wanna verify that i have the correct replacement parts/current setup and that the previous owner didnt install the wrong parts. thanks
