Sidewall Question

:
2002 Mazda Protege5
Well today I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and curbed my rear passenger side tire. When I got home i checked out the damage. Theres a good size curb rash on the rim, and a chunk of tire missing from my sidewall. I was just wondering if I need a new tire, or if this is okay to drive with. It wasn't very deep, so I'm hoping that it's okay to drive with. I don't have the money to buy a new tire.

What he said...

Chunk of tire missing from tread? Bad but not too bad. From the sidewall? I'm gonna go w/ bad...replace the tire. Then again, w/o pics, it's hard to make a call on this one.

are u losing air pressure? if so then get a new tire. they cant fix sideways, i no i still have a crack in mine. im just fillin it up with air everyday... it sucks.

I will agree with the others...replace the tire or something bad could happen.

I've got a leak somewhere in my driverside rear tire (filled it to 35psi Saturday and this morning it is sitting at 12psi)(omg) My dilema (sp) is do I repair it (if possible), buy 2 new 16's (because driverside front is at 4/32, but then I have one new front and one front at 7/32) or use this as my excuse to upgrade to 17's!(thumb)

Sorry for the threadjack....(drinks) on me!!

lol, im kinda in the same situation. i got 1 front tire thats completely bold due to alignment, its goin to pop soon.... same side rear that has a crack n leaks air all the time. and 1 front that is sort of worn, to mayb 7/32, but i got nothing to check it with, and one that looks pretty much like the day i got it, except some wear on the inside. but ya im pretty much screwed cuz my inspection is coming up in 2 months. anyone know where to get some cheap tires? sorry for the jack thread too!

With one bald, one leaking, one semi-worn and one almost new, I say upgrade! Of course it is not my money so WTH. lol Are you still running the stock 16's? I am going to do some research this weekend on stock sizes. Lately I have been looking at 17's and came across this deal..

Late last month they were running the same price + a $50 rebate, but I missed it, because I couldn't find rims within my budget. Still, $200 for 4 new tires is a helluva deal.

Here are the pics. Needless to say I got some pretty bad curb rash, too. :-/ Its about the size of a nickel diameter wise and not even an eigth of an inch deep. Oh well, I just hope I don't need a tire. It sat in the garage all last night and all day outside at school today and with driving around hasn't lost any pressure at all. What do you guys think?

Oh, and sorry about the dirty wheels.

i am suprised the tire didn't pop. how the hell does that happen?
I would do with replace it

it really isnt about losing pressure, it is about how safe it is to drive at high speeds with the sidewall damaged like that and to me it doesnt seem too safe, i would replace it

No problems its just the rubber, you dont have to replace it the rubber is not what gives the wheel its sidewall strength. I would only get concerned if it were down to the cords, then youd have some problems. One of my winter wheels has a chunk of rubber gone like that no problems.

WTF kind of crazy sandpaper curbs do you have over there?

I was trying to imagine how the hell you got a gash without poping the tire. I have to say that is exactly what you got there. good pics and good luck.
