A Rebuild Story - A Forged MP3 Motor

New actuator went in today along with the new transmission cooling system... the actuator is a 15 psi actuator.. my old one was a 7 psi actuator.. with the 7 psi unit I couldn't get above 13 psi without issues.. so the 15 should get me where i need to be! :) Looking forward to driving it tomorrow to see how it treats me..

Also, the trans cooling system is the prototype of our new NSN manual transmission cooler kit... I'll be doing testing and measurements this week to see how it treats me over the long run.

Enjoy the pics.

Dude, Kill the A/C.. You will get so much better cooling...

Yeah.. I know.. but I have no cooling problems at all with the system there... the worst part too is there is no coolant in the AC so it is usless anyway.. just hanging out for fun really :) LOL... but I can get it refilled for free.. and since I drive the car somewhat daily in the summer and the girlfriend really complains when it is 90+ degrees... so I'll probably fix it and keep it in.

You have to get a Lma3- w/ aux. box. It comes with this temperature sensor you can use for anything from egt's, to cyl. head temps, trans temps., to anything you can put it on. It has a correction function to change how sensitive it is to adjust to different materials or fluids. It kicks arse.

No I have standard rings.. and gapped pretty widely at that to deal with the heat... I'll check the PCV... but remember I'm not burning the oil if the PCV was at fault it'd be sucking oil into the intake tracks and I'd be burning it... and I'm not seeing an fouling on those plugs either.. so I'm still not sure where it is going... occasionally at a stop light I can smell it... part of why I suspect my oil feed line for the turbo.

check your valve cover gasket, where it seals to the cam thrust bearings, it's a spot prone to leak and leaking like hell on mine. good luck, i hate leaks. I'm losing coolant quickly as well, don't know where the hell it's going. Perhaps the head gasket has some blow-by...i really hope not. the oil is clean on mine as well. Later.

Thought i'd toss this up... 38 degrees this morning... left the car outside overnight... started it up... first try, first crank, no stall out, and warmed up just dandy by itself... good thing those large injectors and standalones suck at cold starts ;).

I'm leak free.. nothing on the extrenal of the motor or belt area.. nothing under it etc.. nothing getting past the PCV valve per the catch can I have set up... nothing... My consumption seems more stable now... about a quart per 1200 miles which I think is fine.... now my debate is what I do this winter... how much I do or don't tear it down and whether or not I have the cylinders re-honed or not.

arg! how many miles are on those cylinders? seems to me like it's mighty early to be getting them rehoned. I'm sure you already know this, but make sure you get them honed to appropriate roughness corresponding to your rings (stainless rings need a smoother finish i believe than moly).
A quart of oil per 1200 miles is just simply rediculous. I'm eating a quart maybe every 5000-10000! and I'm leaking all over the place...so I think you've got more a problem. Perhaps you're blowing past your turbo seals. I've heard of that happening very early with mitsu turbos... Good luck, either way! Wish i could come actually help you with the car instead of just talking about it. Later

The cylinders have about 6,000 miles on them now... the oil consumption has slowly gone "down" with time here... the turbo is brand new, and I checked both hot and cold side and no blow by or leaks at all... to me 1200 miles per quart is "normal" as I have honestly never really owned any car that used less... even my new Mitsu Lancer I had for a while... that ate oil at a reasonable rate too... I know we did hone per the RA spec that CP requested... so that was done.. but I'll pull the motor apart in 4 weeks and start looking and decide what to do... as it stands I'm not concerned about it and I think it is ok I guess! :) But yes it is less than ideal.. but she is fine.. as long as it survives sunday I'll be a happy guy (hour of track time for a lapping day).

I'm always paranoid about the smell of my "Tailpipe"

The car is running catless so it stinks well.

I think in my brain that I smell oil and then freak out looking in the turbo for bearing blow by and s*** my pants all over looking for where it mihgt get into the chamber. OMG Not a head gasket again I think.. Then I check the oil. Right where it was a month ago... Guess it's just unburnt fuel on a cold set of pipes..

I have since just accepted that my car stinks and does not burn oil. I still check it every other day jsut to be sure and keep a good eye on the Oil Pressure as I round the traffic circles. It's all in my head...

yea, i know where your coming from on that.

i just did my 2.5 cat back, no res no cats, flowmaster. and man, it stinks.

This weekend after my hard racing (video coming this week hopefully) my girlfriend says my car smells way worse of gasoline than she remembers when following me. Enough so that she called me when following me, and I didn't mention anything about the care beforehand. I also noticed a slightly odd vibration at lower RPM's that I don't remember being there... so I'm going to do some checks... but the car goes into storage and is going to get torn down and checked starting in 3 weeks anyway.

Plan to do so .. and probably leakdown as well... I usually run a very very consistent 148-150 across all 4 cylinders... so we'll see what comes out on this run. The JandS was active during some of the racing, but not anything too crazy... my oil temps got pretty high though (just shy of 250) which was my only "concern".

Well just ran the compression test... all 4 plugs are clean and undamaged (although plug 4 had two shiny spots at the bend in the tip... but I think I probably hit it on the head on the way out of the hole...) and all 4 cylinders read 149-150 psi... which is dead nuts normal for me. Car also started and ran just fine... so I'd say I'm likely in the clear as far as mechanical defects... not to mention I did drive it 185 miles after the race.. so it's not like it hasn't had time to get ugly.
