MAM and Clutchmaster Clutches...anyone?

So, I don't know if I'll ever have sucess getting my clutch dealt with properly at the dealer after reading eveyrone's testimonials and how I couldn't get the clutch issue to be replicated while at the dealer.

I may contact Mazda N/A tomorrow to talk to a rep and get that going, but I have an '03 as well and technically the TSB only covers up to '02s...whatever. How much should I fight for it? Great, so if I DID get it replaced, I still end up with a crappy OEM clutch that isnt guaranteed NOT to go cold chatter on me in the future; so if those are the odds, then Id rather just go aftermarket and hopefully have that clutch last for a good 100k miles more (much like my Honda friends have lasted over 180k on their ORIGINAL clutch)

So, my thought is just to go aftermarket. I'm not a fan of ACT and Centerforce considering what I've read and experiences from friends.
I want a near stock feel. I don't really plan on going boost, but I would like to leave that door open in case I fall and knock my head anytime soon and see impellers and downpipes twiddling around my head.also, Id like to support the vendors on here, so Im somewhat torn between:

- MAMs set of clutch options, and
- RR Racings offering of Clutchmaster clutch kits

Id like some honest opinions of each, cost/performance, etc. Im leaning heavily towards supporting Beau and his efforts over at MAM but the Clutchmasters stuff looks good too.

Thanks,
D

I have Hybrid Spec clutch that I bought from MAM. It has STOCK pedal feel, but probably could support over 400 WHP. See my scrolling sig for the model number.

SZ943H is the model number.... Last time I checked, it wasn't on the Spec website.

Thanks Linux; I thought I had read something about you getting a MAM clutch from Beau.

I have sigs off for the time being so thanks for posting that model number.

I have one too, but its not installed yet.. pdhaudio has one installed...

the SZ943H is fast becoming the clutch of choice for any turbo protege. its quite nice.

oh, and as a side note this part is not on their website because it was developed specifically with Beau's specs (he is friends with some SPEC peoples).

Go with Spec, I would say. I ordered the Clutchmaster Stage 1, and it works pretty darn well, but I'll be damned if it's not the noisest clutch I've EVER heard. Uugh. Especially in the winter, and the mornings. Ick.

Sweet; how much was the SZ943H? Is there a suitiable version that doesn't run like $600+?

Is there a site (off to google I go) for spec clutches and info other than MAM?

edit: never mind: www.specclutch.com (cool)

www.**************************.com

though the site works I dont think you can order directly off of it.. PM or call Beau to order

So what's the hybrid part all about? $369 isn't too bad for the SZ943. I'll contact Beau.

Thanks,
D

CM stage II R. 10K miles on it so far with most being at 250 whp+ .

Still feels good, no slip stock feeling engagement etc..

There have been a few problems with this clutch for other boosted protege owners, but they were using the fidanza flywheel as well., i am not.

Really it is up to you. If you dont plan for boost, i say the CM stage 1 or stage II r is right up your alley.

The hybrid means that it will engage like stock, instead of the "digital-like" engangement of most high-performance clutches. I have a picture of my clutch disc from my install somewhere around here... Ahh...there it is below! Notice that it is essentially a six-puck with a solid disc backing. the SZ943 (no H), doesn't have the backing, so it engages harder.

DAMN!!! Thats the disk I need, is there any way i could only order the DISK?????

Been trying to contact him, NO LUCK!

I dont need the pressure plate

i got the CM stage I and fidanza flywheel from raffi in june. have 10K on them and i like the clutch. has not been giving me any trouble in the cold weather yet. can take a beating though not that i abuse it. raffi has pretty good prices and was good dealing with. i figured since i had the tranny out to get the flywheel but it makes the engine's RPM's raise and fall a hell of a lot faster than with the stock flywheel. you get used to it fast......

what does Spec's "lightweight" option do to the clutches? and how much is the SZ943H?

bump
Beau sells the SZ943H for $359 shipped I believe

as for the lightweight option it is exactly that, a lightened clutch. just like a lightened flywheel it reduces rotating mass increasing the rate of reving

Thanks. I didn't see that number on Beau's site so I didn't know. Does it lighten the clutch up enough to even be worth the extra 80?

I rally have no clue, but if you are turbo'd, or dont already have a lighter flywheel then I wouldn't bother.

but if you are N/A and have a light flywheel then whoa, I bet it would rev fast, especially with underdrive pulleys
