2017 CX-5 drl question

Odd to see the button/switch on the passenger side near the glovebox.

The connectors seem to be on that side.

Probably should be able to run some sort of extension so the switch can be near the driver (uhm)

Or they are assuming you just turn it on once and leave it that way. Hence its location.

Here are installation instructions:

Any suggestions appreciated! (spin)
There seems to be a lot more involved to install this kit. I saw splices that means you have to cut into some wires which is opposite to what the description says. Easy installation? May not be for a first-timer.

I'd email JapanParts.com asking for help with an English version of the installation instruction if you have a hard time to understand the instruction. I remember they can at least translate the Japanese instruction for you. This isn't going to be a single weekend job for me, especially to be the first person in the US attempting this mod. We really appreciate your effort and are anxiously waiting for your result.

■ Since a dedicated connector is used, there is no need to cut the wiring!

■ Since the genuine connector is used, it is easy to install!

By the pictures it uses a single wire tap, a single screw for a ground, and adds a pin to an already existing harness along with the male / female harness connections. It's about as OEM integrated / plug and play as you can get for modding an OEM lighting circuit.

The question that will need to be answered is if the wire harness where you need to add the pin on the NA models is exactly the same as the overseas models that these instructions were intended for, or if there's a difference that will have to be resolved with some DIY sleuthing / workarounds.

I can't understand the schematic with the non-english, but from what I see I still believe it works the same way: The switch will provide power to the signature lighting when the lights should actually be off. I believe for this to work you will actually have to fully disable the DRL system, then use this kit to manually override that disable to turn the signature lighting back on, otherwise the headlights may still be on in their lower power DRL mode.

If it does require the DRL's to be disabled this won't work for anyone in Canada as, due to the laws in place, DRL override is not possible here.

All of the above is purely guesswork on my part based on what I saw in the photos and I could very likely be wrong. Trying to provide insight for anyone who's going to attempt.

Maybe there's a clip online showing installation or something very similar (scratch)

I did a few tests with different headlight switch positions during daylight this morning, while facing a glass storefront (so I could see the results). While the headlight switch was in Auto mode (with the shifter in DRIVE), both the headlights and the LED signature lights were on. When I changed the headlight switch to ON the headlight bulbs got a bit brighter, and I did not see a difference in the LED signature lights. When I put the switch in the "parking lights" position (one step from OFF) and the shifter in PARK, only the LED signature lights were on, but when I put the shifter in DRIVE, all the lights were on again. So I concluded that the LED headlight bulb and the signature LED lights are supposed to work together as DRLs in the US market, albeit with the headlight bulb at a lower intensity level during the day than at night. Personally I think it looks awesome just the way it is.

I want to try similar tests at night, so see if the light sensor affects these results (you’d think they would, otherwise why have them).

I've noticed that this "look" is not unique to Mazda. I have seen some Audi and VW vehicles that follow a similar look, but I think the CX-5 looks better. I would not worry about prematurely wearing out the LED headlights. They might actually outlive the car.

You can thank your country's laws for that weirdness

I too like the look of the lights the way Mazda has set them up.

The Australian top spec Akera was reviewed and I was able to capture DRL's in action:

Looking at the images, the signature accent strips are illuminated but also the led directly under it, adjacent to the led headlights.

The third image also shows the turn signal starting to illuminate.

It should be noted that the tail lamps are not illuminated when DRL's are on like they are on the CX-9.

Just got my first Mazda, the '17 cx5 GT w/premium pkg. I can say I was pretty immediately annoyed by this issue with the DRLs utilizing the center LED. I'm surprised that you would need to buy and install a special wiring harness to adjust this setting. I know in my Audi that the DRL/general lighting behavior can all be adjusted by connecting to the ECU via "VAG-COM" software, so I would assume something similar would be possible in Mazda but I guess I could be wrong. Is there a way to "hack" into the ECU and play around with the electronics settings? I'd also like to turn off all the stupid nanny-features like disabling nav address input while driving (hello, you can also have passengers Mazda...!), turn off seatbelt warnings, and always allow touch screen (how is that even a safety feature?)

I also think the sound system seems pretty weak, especially for Bose, and the fact that you have really terrible control over audio stations etc via the steering wheel controls and no audio menu on the right hand dial screen is pretty bush league for a car that's supposed to be attempting to bridge the gap between economy and premium brands.

When the saleswoman tried to tell me how cool it was that you could adjust the audio settings like bass, treble, fade, like every radio I have ever seen in even the oldest and cheapest of cars I felt like throwing her out of the car.

Anyways, I'm going to try disabling the DRLs with the instructions posted here: https://www.mazdas247.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=216519&d=1494012627 when my wife gets home with the car and see how I like that.

Have you tried turning on Centrepoint?

Yeah. I have a suspicion that the speakers in the front left and right corners of the car might not be working properly though. When listening to music the nav voice is so low its almost completely inaudible, I ended up just turning it all the way off because it was annoying the hell out of me. I need to do some testing.
