New owner (maybe?) + Recall Notice!?

I cannot believe that I bought one yesterday and they issued the recall today. Bastards waited until the first of the month to get those last sales in.

Mazda's fiscal end of month was February 1st. Technically, they stopped the CX-5 sales on the last day of the sales month.

It makes sense now that 2013 is included.

Not too worried about this. Worse case scenario is an inconvenience. Best case scenario we get a new, improved fuel tank. Most likely scenario, Mazda installs a new, improved fuel filler hose on their dime.

actually, wouldn't the worse case scenario be dying a horrible death by fire?

Worse case is inconvenience.

Worst case is dying a horrible death by fire.

Haha! Good point! That remote possibility wasn't even on my radar!

As a motorcyclist, I am in the habit of observing traffic behind me when I come to a stop. I naturally do it when driving a 4-wheeled vehicle as well. I always leave enough room to take evasive action if I see someone approaching too fast to stop in time. This saved me from a nasty rear end one time while on my motorcycle (unaware driver finally slammed on his brakes and squealed to a stop 3 feet from the bumber of the car I was stopped behind). Always watch your rearview mirrors until you see other traffic safely stopped behind you!

So, no, I don't find the risk of fire due to being rear-ended particularly alarming because I deal with far higher risk every time I ride my motorcycle!

It's OK Jason, Mike seems to always cover for CX5 problems (read his threads)

Anyways it might be a remote possibility but nonetheless still probable and concerning especially if you have a family member that cant quite take a seat belt off in the rear seat.

but its ok I guess if this happens (wink)

Came across this:

Here is the recall info from the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Database.
Transport Canada Recall # 2016049
Recall Date 2016/02/01
Notification Type Safety Mfr System Fuel Supply
Manufacturer Recall Number
Units Affected The number of vehicles or components affected by the recall. 48,412
Category SUV Recall Details Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 301 Fuel System Integrity.

During rear impact crash testing, the fuel filler pipe ruptured, causing fuel spillage exceeding the limit specified by the standard. As a result, a collision involving the rear of the vehicle could result in a fuel leak. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing injury and/or property damage.

Correction: Dealers will remove a bolt on the left rear side member attaching the bracket to the fuel filler pipe. This will change the load path during a rear crash impact preventing filler pipe rupture. Make Model Model Year(s) Affected MAZDA CX-5 2014 2015

Sorry about the formatting on this post, but here's the info that came up when I looked up my VIN:

Recall Date: 02/01/16
Recall Description: The fuel filler pipe could rupture during a rear collision, and could potentially cause fuel leakage.
Safety Risk: When fuel leakage occurs there is a risk of a fire.
Repair Description: The attachment between the fuel filler pipe and the vehicle body will be changed.
Recall Status: Recall Incomplete. Remedy Not Yet Available

Has anyone tried to contact their local dealerships yet?

I checked the "Check Recall" tab of the My Mazda phone app and it shows an "Important Safety Recall Notice" number 9216B issued 2/1/2016 regarding "Fuel Filler Pipe" and provides the Mazda Customer Service Assistance Center number: 800-222-5500. I have not called.

I just called my dealership and they said they don't have a fix from Mazda yet, but are expecting something tomorrow.

Put in the VIN from the CX-5 we picked up on Saturday and it shows no recalls.

Was built 11/2015.

Interesting that fixing the problem could actually involve removing a bolt, rather than adding or replacing something. Hopefully the fix is so simple.

Contacted my Dealer today and their response was, "they'll let me know the proper coarse of action once the recall is officially launched." Has me scratching my head because I thought the recall has launched? I feel like I was making my dealership aware of this problem. I was checking today with them to satisfy my wife since she's a bit scared about me driving around our daughters in the car if there is a safety issue going on with it.

Yeah... if true.... about the easiest fix. Assuming the fill pipe is still secure after removal they won't even need a new part.

Appears to be a low risk as there's been zero issues. Apparently the fix involves removing one bolt. I can assure there's other cars with more serious defects rolling around.

If true, that is the simplest recall I have ever heard of.

So simple, one could do it themselves. However, still a good idea to take it in as there is a database of VIN numbers matched up with recall actions. Could potentially affect future resale if you still have an open recall showing...
