GRAND-AM To Add B-Spec Races

Jan. 28, 2012

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2011) - GRAND-AM Road Racing announced today an exciting complement to its two existing sports car series, in the form of a new "B-Spec" level featuring sub-compact cars in six races this season.

Currently, the six sprint races - planned for between 30 and 45 minutes in length - will run in conjunction with GRAND-AM weekends at Homestead-Miami Speedway (April 27-29), New Jersey Motorsports Park (May 11-13), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (June 8-9), Watkins Glen International (June 29-July 1), Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Sept. 7-9) and Lime Rock Park (Sept. 28-29). Each of those weekends will also feature North America's most popular forms of sports car competition - the GRAND-AM Rolex Series and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

Regional racers who meet entry requirements are welcome at each event, with a concentration on event victories instead of a national championship. No currently licensed professional drivers will be allowed to participate.

A total of five manufacturers have committed to the new competition, with the following models involved: Mazda 2, Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Mini Cooper, and Kia Rio. Additional future manufacturer entries are expected.

One of the fastest-growing segments of the automobile business, B-Spec is among the most affordable classes for entry-level racers, and is expected to enjoy great support from club racers.

Cars will be 4-cylinder models, with a target cost range of $20,000-$30,000.

B-Spec features showroom stock racing cars utilizing stock engines and chassis, fitted with a competition roll cage, racing seat and other safety equipment; and manufacturer-approved suspension components, tires and wheels. Weight and other variables will be used to balance performance among competing manufacturers.

Each manufacturer will develop an approved performance kit which is subject to GRAND-AM approval. These will be the only alterations permitted to the respective cars. All practice sessions will also serve as qualifying to set race grids.

"This new form of GRAND-AM racing will attract new racers and in the process, new fans," said GRAND-AM Managing Director of Racing Operations Mark Raffauf. "The cars are cool and the competition will be door-to-door, which should be a lot of fun for everyone - a nice fit with what GRAND-AM already has happening at every event."

Lime Rock Park Mazda Owners Corral

Just wanted to give you guys the heads up on what we're planning for the season ending event in September@ LRP.We're bringing the big Castrol Package out and we are going to raise money for Guardian Angel Motorspots.com. Bruce and Linda LeDoux are parents of a spec kale needs child and they're looking to raise 30 million dollars go help other special need children by raising money per number of laps they complete this year. I think it can be done and with our help and that of our NEPOC Family, we can help lead the way. I will have more info, once I have pricing for the event. C.J. will be signing jerseys, hats, balls, etc for our raffle and we'll look into getting tickets for the Angel vs Red Sox game in 2013, unless the meet in the World Series!

This is awesome! My good friends at Kaizen Tuning are part of the Guardian Angel team.

LRP this time is a very good chance i'll make it :)

BTW, CorkSport radiator for protege 3rd gen + 2 ebay slim fans (and aluminum bracket, no zip-ties here) weighted about 19~20lb dry but the stock one with fans was about 10lb (stock fans weighted more than stock radiator lol) , my scale is old and the dial wasn't that clear.

Great news Mark. When are you planning to close??

Hmm LRP should be interesting this year!!
well, we're not that close, they've looked at it twice and said they're very interested...we told them the price and they didn't balk, they have a house to sell too, so it may still be a ways off...we're in no big rush so we can wait it out. i've got the roof and siding to do anyway this spring.
My daughter might jump on this deal. ;)

no kidding? did you see it before i posted it?

Whats up NEPOCers!! Started back at the gym today! Nice work out this am! I have to stick with it this time, Drs orders! The old ticker is on the fritz again, im too young for heart problems, he agrees! So on a strict diet, work outs daily... Gotta get under 220 in four months, im 255 now.

Tony I use the Livestrong app on my phone to track calories, I would recommend using that for more support. I'm trying to cut for race season.

Haven't you heard? 29"ers are the rage now. I ride with a bunch of people and I can't for the life of me keep up with the guys on 29"ers. Granted I only paid $500 for my GF 26" hardtail, but I swear their 29"ers roll over rough single track like it was a paved rail trail. One guy rides a fully rigid single speed 29"er and its amazing how much speed he can hold on the downhills.

Hello! Lot's going on here....wish ya luck in getting healthy Tony, that's a lot of money to drop on a bike Kyle...bittersweet to hear you have a potential buyer for the house Mark...LRP sounds like it will be a blast, yet again, and hope to try and get up there this year...

Had a good laugh over the weekend....guy who works for me bought a 2011 MX-5 last fall and loves it but is not enjoying the summer tires so much now that winter is here. He claims that the salesman told him before signing the papers that the car came with all-seasons...now he is contesting with the dealer that it should have had all-seasons vs. summers according to his paperwork. He was at the dealer over the weekend getting some stuff done and was texting me what he was being told....

1)The car would have come with all-seasons because of the region we live in (sorry, never heard of that...is this true? My understanding is the car would come with summers no matter where it was purchased) but because his car came with the perfomance package, all-seasons were not an option....say what?

2)The dealer was looking into getting him new wheels and tires. I asked why he would need new wheels and the he said the tech told him that he was unsure if all-seasons would fit the stock wheels?! Let's just say it was a good thing I hadn't just taken a drink!!! LMAO I told him the guy had no clue and that he could put snow tires on those wheels as long as they were the right size. I also told him that several all-season tires are available in the size he needs just-in-case the dumbass tech tried to tell him otherwise.

3)Still up in the air on whether or not he will get the all-seasons from the dealer, I told him from day one to buy a set of dedicated snow tires but he didn't want to listen to me....

On a related note, I have a friend that bought a used Subaru. I swear he must have bought it at night because the second I saw it I pointed out the crack in the bumper and that it had half-worn snow tires mounted. Make fun of tire-kickers all you want, but you gotta at least inspect the tires. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that "winterforce" doesn't stand for "all season". He probably could have negotiated a new set of tires into the deal if he had been smart.

Just think...before the internet, we were probably all this dumb.
