Stupid Things You've Done Modifying/Maintaining Your Ride

While putting on the powder coated valve cover I managed to snap two of the bolts that hold the valve cover down. Luckily I was doing the work at my parents house (not enough light in my underground parking), so borrowed my moms car to drive to canadian tire to get some bolts. Thankfully most hardware stores in Canada stock metric hardware.

Also, while installing a short ram intake managed to snap most of the ring clamps that came with the e-bay kit.

I also broke one of the valve cover bolts once, luckily it didn't break in two until after I got it out, they are made of some soft metal.

^^^ They're only supposed to be torqued down like 6-8 ft-lbs...

Yeah...I did this yesterday, and it says 60-84 inch-pounds (5-8 foot-pounds). If you're not careful, it could be misread, and you're definitely going to break stuff at 60 foot-pounds.

On a stupid things note, I sliced open my finger real good while working on my wiring harness yesterday...a nice trip to immediate care and I'm all patched up.

i feel slightly less of an idiot now that i know some people make small mistakes. although i still believe i take the cake. most recently i was jacking up my car using jack stands. i was in the process of lowering the car back onto the ground so first i raise it, move the jack stands out of the way, and then proceed to lower it...except when i lowered it, the car wasn't actually going any lower. surprize! i moved the jackstand directly under the soft side sill! from standing height its not noticable, but a comparison of both sides reveals the sills on the passenger side of the car definitely looks a bit warped. underneath you will admire a nice, deep, divot, courtesy of my stupidity. i'm surprized it didnt give way to the weight of the car and make me a permanent stain on the pavement.

The stupidest things I have done modifying my car “If this is even considered modifying my car.” I installed cheap neon under glow kit to my first Mazda Protege5 I owned. I will be truthful, “extremely embarrassed” Fast and Furious 1 had me hypnotized to the rice era. I drilled the neon kit to my car, did a horrid wiring job and installed the box that powered the neon kit under the car. Proud of my failure, I drove to University of Maryland College Park to show off to my friends. Sadly most of my friends approved of the cheap under glow neon kit “since most of them did not own a car, it was the coolest thing in the world to them. FAIL for all of us”. I got a few snickers from the Mustang group there. A day later it snowed and rained and I decided drive to 7-11 and smelled a burning smell. I had the kit running at the time “like an idiot”, the box that powered the neons... I mounted box to power the neons under the car which needed to be installed in the engine bay away from water. The kit cracked eventually “my car was lowered” by the ice and snow I had driven over. I went to the dealership to get my oil changed at the time, the dealer had a hard time lifting my car on the lift since the neon kit was installed and in the way. The dealer did not want to damage it. I was embarrassed and knew that this was a sign from the heavens to repent for my car modifying sins. I put on a glove in anger and ripped the kit from under my car at the dealership. The box was and wires were extremely fried; I am surprised I did not set my car on fire.

The next worst mod was installing strobe lights. I went to Rockville Maryland’s old car meeting spot next to the Borders. I saw lots of civics, Hyundai’s, KIAs, LS1 Camero’s 20’s and a Navigator with Lambo doors with strobe lights. I sinned again, and found a cheap set of strobe lights from eBay. I drilled them into my headlights and installed the kit. I was proud of my failure. I used silicon to seal the giant crack which leaked into the headlight. Once realizing my failure, I thought to myself, “OMG… What have I done…!” To feel that I didn’t waste my time and money I forced to go to the car meets and flashed my strobe lights in shame.

Another mod which I regretted because it gave me a lot of problems was installing 4 TV’s in my car and mounting a Sega Dreamcast there to blast Street Fighter 3rd impact. I would go to the car meets and invite random people to play with me. I am surprised my car never got broken into. I was always showing off my crappy Sony amp with 2 crappy sony explode subs that I got ripped off at best buy. It was a wiring nightmare, and the TV’s constantly stopped working. LOL

Last but not least, I painted my calipers… It was hot outside and I decided to rush the final process of applying the clear coat. I lost my job at the time, and didn’t want to spend my reserve money on new brakes and rotors. They squeaked and squealed badly since I decided to be an idiot and just randomly spray the clear coat everywhere without covering everything properly. The sound drove me insane, in anger I decided to speed up to 85 mph and just mashed the brakes completely in attempt to burn it off. That did nothing except wear my brakes and rotors down. LOL

That poor Mazda ended its torture and was hit by a drunk driver, but saved my life during that car accident. Many years later I purchased another Protege5 and started building her up the right way!

Just recently I cut my 2nd O2 sensor wiring harness to install a MIL eliminator, when I went to resolder the harness back together I removed some electrical tape and found I had already installed a MIL eliminator 4 years ago............. Note to everyone, don't leave your car not running and sitting in your garage for 4 years.... you tend to forget what you have already done ;)
Guess my O2 sensor is just shot causing my CEL

Glad to know I'm not the only one...lol.

First was when I went from double-din radio to single-din with MSP Radio pocket...ended up scratching the s*** out of the stereo surround and snapping my vent control cable...not cool.

Touched a hot HID bulb after testing when I switched to HID. Ouch.

Rear coilovers in the front/ vice versa...almost s*** my pants dropping the hoist to the ground.

Tried swapping oil cap for shiny new Mazdaspeed on a hot motor.

When replacing my battery, plugged positive in negative prong and vice versa.

Over-tightened c-clamps on intake tube ends...guys at Injen said I wasn't the first.

Blown half the fuses swapping battery, cd player, HIDs, Horns, various lights.

Tried installing Racing Beat Rear Sway Bar on stock endlinks...lol.

Drove for 2 days with only one side of front strut tower brace fastened.

Wiring sideshow when installing my oil pressure, voltmeter, outside temp gauge combo.

Mutilated my attempt at "light up" doorsills by scratching plastic layer above "Protege" decal.

Broke the spring clips to hold low beam bulbs in place often enough.

That's it for now, but more to come this spring for sure.

I guess ill share my own
1.Put new rotors on without cleaning them first had a blast stopping
2.Had a built scooter with a 5shot of nos accidently hit the switch at over 10k rpms that was 2 of 3 times I blew it up
3.Dumped a total of about $5k into a scooter was the dumbest thing
4.Forgot to put the new oil filter in while doing an oil change
5.used a pen as a dipstick on a cougar cause it was leaking oil from the dipstick,it still leaked oil but from the head gasket...

Well another one from me I found last night, I was getting a clunk from the rear left wheel well...... Turns out my roll cage on that side was only finger tight (Harnesses are attached to the roll cage) :( Now that that is fixed I am safe to drive and the clunk is gone :)

1. put tweeters on the inside portion of my door panels, ran wires and everything. got'em work'n and went to close the doors only to find out the tweeters prevented the doors from close'n by a good 5 inches or so. removed them and left big mounting holes where they were, so every time i open'd the doors i see those holes.

2. forgot to pump my brakes after a brake job and went to stop only to have the pedal go all the way to the floor and hit a basketball pole.

1) When I replaced my gas tank. I worked by butt off to get those 11 crappy rusted phillips screws out cleanly of the fuel pump assembly. drove into town (30 mins away, I live in country) to look for new screws that would work, didn't find any. Figured I could salvage the old ones. got the new tank on fuel pump installed all done. Car all cleaned up. only to start cutting up the box the tank came in only to have a new gasket and pack of new phillips screws to fall out. Needless to say took the back seat apart and undid everything again to get those in. Also broke two of the big bolts while taking the tank off :/

2) ripped the whole interior of the car apart trying to get to the bolts that hold on the exhaust tunnel shield off. Turns out they are just in the floor but had broken off where they must have been welded in and where just spinning. Ended up using a crowbar to just break the heads through the bottom of the floor and took the tunnel out. Filled the holes with tar and silicone and no more tunnel shield. lol.

I washed and waxed mine so much the clear coat is pealing up on the plastic parts now(spank) They always said I was gonna wash the paint right off........
Oh, and I always forget to put the windshield wipers down after washing so when I open the hood to clean the engine bay they scrape the paint right off the hood.

Many many many things, ill post um up when I have time.SUb for now.

Good story.

I accidentally and inadvertently unplugged my IAT sensor the day before dropping my car off for some dyno time / tuning. I got a call from them going "So, uh... we're getting nothing from the IAT, what's up with that?" Fortunately, it was an easy fix lol.
