The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

I can't do it Friday but are you going to the Mid-Ohio Grand-Am race?

Levi just confirmed what I've noticed. I've been running the regular 3 s techs on my speed and they've ridden basically the same as when they were on my 3. So yeah...save yourself the money.

Ha, that is still 2 months away! Damn.

I drive the Miata 90% of the time in the summer so it isn't that much of an issue.

Found a puddle of fluid on the garage floor over the weekend under the left rear of the Speed3. Looks like the culprit is a bad shock:

Anyone have some advice/options for replacing this? I know Chippy had this problem a while ago and went with the BC coilovers. So those are definitely on the list, my other options are:

Mazdaspeed Coilovers (KW Variant 3), from Mazda Motorsports I can get them for $1525.07
Koni Yellows + what spring?
The Miata folks over at M.net say good things about Bilstein HDs but, at least for the Miata, they have to be revalved for the springs.
The less fun option is to just get the bad shock replace with a stock one.

Anything else I should be considering? How long should I be running around on the bad shock?

Billy HD's are really nice. I have many friends who run them on their BMW's (race cars and street cars) and love them

spring rates are 163 lbs/in(front) and 241 lbs/in (rear) or 3k front, 4k rear and thats the same spring rates for both the 3 and speed3 so you could save yourself about 60-70 bucks and just get the springs from the 3 instead of the speed3 springs

ill be out in akron, ohio next friday night if you want to meet up and go for a ride so you can feel how the stech/yellow combo is id be willing to meet up

You are? Or do you mean the 29th?

If you're not gonna track it go for the Konis, if it's going to see little track then BC's are fine but if it's going to see a lot of it, then I'd go with MazdaSpeed or H&R. If you're just looking for an excuse to upgrade stuff then go with the BCs, after you add springs to the Konis you'll be very close but Konis will be more comfortable DD depending where you live. I live in Parma and sometimes I don't like such a rough ride

Pent up frustration right now is making me say this, and I need to vent. Don't take it seriously.

Holy s***, and Ohio member not recommending coilovers? How long until the River Styx is ready to ice skate on?

lulz

I forgot to mention, you're welcome to ride in my car and see what you'd be dealing with. I know it would have helped me make up my mind

well considering this coming friday is the 22nd, next friday would be the 29th (hand) haha

dude even if you are going to track occasionally id still go konis and springs over the bc's... its only if i were tracking several times a year or autocrossing regularly that i would buy coilovers

and hey if you dont like the rough ride maybe we can work out a trade and you can have my koni's and stechs lol

That sounds good to me. What setup are you running?

I will probably take the MS3 to the track at some point, but it might be once or twice total. It's hard not to just take the Miata.

I have a Protege so I don't count, but honestly, I didn't notice a big difference from my S-Techs/Tokico HP's to the BC coilovers. I've always liked Tein's and for a DD it's nice to "set it and forget it!".

But I haven't been on track with the BC's so I just voided my own comment. Nevermind.

Oh cool. Megan and me will be in town this weekend. I think we are planning on going to the Vintage Gran Prix on Saturday. Let me know if you and Jenn are free. First time I'll be in PA since christmas and I am cramming a whole bunch of s*** into three days. :)

I have mazdaspeed FSB, Hotchkis RSB and the BC coils. PM me if you want to meet up

that sounds tempting since I might buy a miata to track and keep the 3 as a DD, so I'd get rid of the BCs and get something more comfortable but your car looks lower than mine... do you have issue with the snow? I don't get stuck with my current height but sometimes I have a hard time if it's bad
