Question about replacing speakers on a Bose system.

First off, I have searched and haven't found a clear answer...


So here it goes...

I am looking to replace my speakers in my Mazda3. I have the Bose system.
I am not using the factory HU, I have a Pioneer in there, and I am not using the Bose Subwoofer, I have a sub and amp.


So my question is, since I do not want to re wire my door speakers or buy a amp for my door speakers:

1. If I just replace my door speakers and let them be ran by the bose amp, will it sound any better?

2. Do I need to buy a 2ohm speaker? Or can I run a 4ohm in there? If I run a 4 ohm what will happen?

Using a four-ohm speaker won't hurt anything. You will get slightly less power, but it's unlikely you'll hear any difference. Speakers are the single best way to improve sound, just as more memory will make a computer faster.

not much, if at all, try to find a 2ohm with a high Db rating like 91 or better

2. Do I need to buy a 2ohm speaker? Or can I run a 4ohm in there? If I run a 4 ohm what will happen? as mike said, not much, just that the weak ass blose amp will be pushing against more resistance, everything will last longer, so thats good(confused)

you could get 4 ohm speakers, which gives you a much better selection, then replace the worst part of the stock setup

Yeah, the Pioneer HU will run 4ohm speakers just fine. I just recently completely changed out the stock system. On a 1-5 scale, if I put the stock system at 1, being the worst, the upgraded system at 5, the best. I would put the the stock speakers with external amp and sub at a 3-4 already. Music just sounds so much better if you feed it proper power and adding some low end punch. But I would for sure change out the stock speakers, they really are pathetic comparing side by side to some aftermarkets.

I installed 2ohm (also 4ohm compatible) Infinity Reference 2-ways last year, and they sounded worse than the stock speakers with everything else being equal. How the stock speakers "compare side by side to some aftermarkets" has nothing, nothing, nothing to do with how they will function/sound.

meicalnissyen is right, the amp under the seat is the weak point. Install a better amp and the stock speakers will sound better.

If you have time, read through both threads that Breezy linked in there -- the second one is me ultimately failing at improving the system by installing my Infinities.

Installing the tweeters, capacitors and inductors (coils) described in those threads has kept me sane with the stock equipment. My Infinities have been laying around in their boxes collecting dust, let me know if you want them. Some day maybe I'll install an amp and be able to put them to use.

I've never connected aftermarket speakers to the stock Bose amp so I don't know how they would sound. Maybe someone else can comment on that. If the stock amp can't provide enough power, than the after market speakers are not going to sound very good. The factory did choose those speakers to pair with the amp for a reason. But with every aspects of the car, cost saving is evident.

I can only speak from my experience, which was, aftermarket amp + stock speaker=way better sound, aftermarket amp + new Infinities=awesome. I don't want to turn this into a this brand speakers vs that brand speakers thread, and of course there are much much better speakers out there than Infinities. But at the price point, they are pretty good. I've had them for several of my previous cars and never had problems with them. But don't let one man's experience sway you. You can always go get a pair of aftermarkets, change them and see if you like the sound, if not, return them. Install is easy anyway.

Actually I was looking to get a new set of MB Quartz speakers. I had them in my Protege and loved them.

Does anyone know how much power the bose amp can handle? I know the stock HU in the Protege couldn't handle the MB Quarts, so this is making me think I may need to get an amp after all..

It doesn't handle any amps, but the going guess is that it can produce around 75 into 2ohms

Why would wirecutting be needed? sonic has nice adapters, you can mod the adapter, and leave ALL the stock wiring alone
