Trubo XS DP/RP installed :)

Well I just finished up installing the turboxs DP/RP combo and I thought I would let everyone know how it went and my first impressions.

The install really isn't hard at all, it's just a time consuming process that you have to be patient with. Once you get the stock DP out it is easy as can be after that. I soaked all of the downpipe bolts with pb blaster throughout the process of removing all of the stock heatshields, intercooler, ect. The only time I ran into a problem was for the top o2 sensor. And I guess it wasn't really a "problem" just that I think the only tool I didn't have available to me was an o2 sensor remover tool. Rather than use a 7/8" crow foot (which you can use btw just be careful, o2 sensor is $400) I ran out to autozone and picked up an 02 sensor remover wrench.

Installing the new DP/RP is a easy as heck compared to taking out the stock one. I installed the DP portion first and then installed the RP. All of the exhaust parts mounted up perfectly with very little work required to get anything to go together. The only problem I can see I may run into is that the turboxs bolts are a bit short for where the DP meets the RP and where the RP meets the catback. I used some locktite on those bolts but if they back out, a quick run to the hardware store will solve that problem.

Now for the sound/performance. The sound of this car makes me laugh every time I start it just because it sounds so ridiculous comming from a car like this. During a cold start the idle is LOUD untill the car warms up a bit. After the car is warm you honestly can barely tell the car has any exhaust work at idle. However, touch the gas and the car quickly reminds you it has no cats/resonators/mufflers. As loud as it may be when your getting on it, (its freeking LOUD) cruising in town you can keep it quiet as hell by using the correct gear. On the highway with the cruise set the car is rather quiet too. I would have no problems taking it on a long trip.

I drove the car around for 60 miles or so last night to help the computer get used to the new found air flow/power. Boost seems to build faster and the turbo spools a bit sooner it seems. Power wise there is a noticeable improvement, the car will light the tires up from a roll in second gear if you just stab the gas and it will spin going into 3rd pretty good. What I noticed most is how much harder the car pulls in the upper RPM's.

Overall I am very happy with the purchase. Anyone who is worried about the install should just read over the "how to" on the "other" forum a few times and have at it. It really is not a hard process, just time consuming. I did it on my garage floor in about 5.5 hours and that is with a trip to autozone and a 30-40 min lunch break. The power difference is worth the money you spend and the sound of my car is just awesome. When people give me the (boom04) look, I can't help but smile.

My Cobb AP will be here tuesday so that's when things should get fun :).

If you have any questions at all feel free to ask. Sorry I didn't take any pictures, the howto on the "other" forum is all I used for reference and I think I looked at it maybe 2 times. And I know "this post is useless without vid" but I have no camera right now that won't come out sounding very distorted but I will try and work on getting a better camera.

damn, what map are you gonna use?

i might just do the same thing you do... sorry lol

I am going to try out the stage 2+ sf intake map and see how the car runs, if I don't like anything with it I'll just change it to something custom. I am happy with what i've got so far :) no need to be sorry at all haha have at it!!!

Good job on the install and performance :)...You will prabaly either need custom tune via tunershop or yourself if your capable...Ive had a toughtime with the stock ots maps..and thats me running exactly what you need for the map. Your downpipe doesnt have a cat so that poses more prabs..so becareful with your car till you can log your numbers to make sure you car is healthy..but other than that yeah awesome :) you got a good modlist and your car will be a very solid performer. The Mazda ecu is just one picky little biatch and differs from car to car..good tune my friend and your gonna be pleased :)

Thanks for the words of advice! I have been taking it pretty easy so far, just waiting for the AP to show up. Hopefully the OTS maps will work for me but if not I feel pretty comfortable tweaking some things and if that doesn't work protegegarage is only a small drive away :). I am really excited to get the AP in my hands, hopefully before winter I will have my FMIC and turbo manifold ordered but hopefully on. What kind of problems have you been running into with your tunes? Boost spikes, KR, ?

KR was alittle high on stage 2..so im running stage 1. which is retarded cause with my mods "I should" be running stage 2..but like its been said before the ecu for this car varies from 1 to another..so it is what it is...I do have light knock on stage 1..but thats lowload knock on the lower rpm side which is not a prablem. I was also pulling to much timing and afr's were alittle too lean for stage 2..so here in about 3 weeks or so ill be getting it custom tuned at surgeline,But when I was running the stage 2 map..dam did my car pull hehe. I play it safe right now and am going cdfp internals before I get my custom tune just to be safe. Iam running strong 1600-1800 psi with stage 1 right now...All in all you should be fine..you just gotta datalog your car's behavior and take it one step at atime..do some good 1st-4th geat pulls to about 6000 rpm and check em out see what you gotta change if anything. Goodluck and safe tuning :)

Thanks a lot! Sorry to hear you have been having some issues but hopefully that custom tune will take care of everything. I plan to load the Stage 2 + SF map and see how she runs. If I see any knock I am going to try and remedy that with a gallon or two of 100 octane per fill up and if I get boost spikes that are too high, I will see if lowering the boost targets with ATR in the trouble areas solves the problems. What kind of AFR should I be looking for at WOT, 11.6-11.8? I am hoping my FP is healthy enough to preform well but if not, some new internals should take care of it. Can't wait to see what that new tune does for you!!

Cant honestly remember the exact afr ratios..but it was lean..last datalog was while back. Your fuel pump should be fine..but as alwas just keep a eye on it :)

So tell us what happened, saw that you are selling the DP/RP parts off? Just curious as to your reasons. Seems like you just put these parts on your car. I know I had my reasons for going back (not exactly to stock set up) but closer to stock...

I broke my primary 02 sensor putting the DP in and didn't want to spend another 400$ for a sensor. I am in the position to buy one of 2 cars that I have wanted for a very long time so I am jumping on the chance and returning my car back to stock, taking it to the dealer to get the 02 sensor replaced, and then selling the car.

Not trying to disuade you, LOL, but you're almost there. Another $250 for the sensor and then ride it a while. You'll break out in a big smile after you get your afr's where you want them and your boost targets zoned in.

I think you will really like this once you spend a little time with the car.

I am sure I would have, but I am in a good position to buy a car that I have wanted for years now and I am going to go for it but that requires me to sell the MS3 to make room for the new toy. I appreciate it though, I still love the MS3, it's just time to move on to a car that I have wanted for way too long :). Plus all of my parts sold already so there is no turning back haha.
