Brake Boosting...how to pull this trick off?

I'm waiting for you guys to come up with something better than sarcasm.

Did you register here just for this thread?

Nope, just happened to be the first thread I popped into. I'm a big fan of MS3's and MazdaSpeed cars in general.

There's a difference between braking boosting and "riding them for a few seconds at whatever speed you happen to be traveling"...when you're riding the brakes for a little bit the engine is decelerating...the only "force" the brakes are acting against is the spinning motion of the rotor... but when you're brake boosting you're applying the brakes to slow down the rotor while you're at WOT with the engine attempting to spin the rotor with everything its got. Brake boosting is not going to grenade your entire car but it does put more-than-normal strains on the engine and the drivetrain, and doing it for a prolonged time WILL **** your brakes without lubrication...if you're just running something that's "slow" or about evenly matched then don't even bother...but if you're desperate...go right on ahead.

Technically, yes you're correct. The amount of braking force you need is exactly the amount of force you need to counteract the power output of the engine. In other words, it's the force you'd need to decelerate the car at the same rate as the car would otherwise accelerate at WOT. In reality, this is NOT going to stress the brakes abnormally unless done excessively. Take a WOT run in 3rd or 4th gear, note the acceleration, then brake at the same rate. You'll find you're probably not applying the brakes all that hard. Certainly not hard enough where you'd worry about damaging the brakes.

As to whether it puts extra stress on engine/drivetrain components or not, the torque being produced by the engine and applied to the drivetrain at WOT is the same whether the car is accelerating or not. The only components seeing more duty than a normal WOT run are your brakes. And unless you're doing it for prolonged periods (like for an entire 1/4 mile) the braking duty required is far from excessive.

I don't mean to come off all anal retentive, but this is a topic I've seen come up many times, and the thread always starts out with a lot of scary overblown information that simply isn't true. Whether it's worth doing or not is a completely different discussion. IMO, occasional use is no big deal, just like running a car to redline, spinning the tires, or any of the other activities one would engage in during a bout of *ahem* spirited driving.

plain and simple it aides to the wear and tear of all the driving components of the car, more so than someone who drives normally. it might not break something now, but it's not helping anything to last longer.

this is why i don't buy used cars...because of threads like this
