I am pretty sure I remember a few people saying this but my car now has alittle over 1500 miles on it, so should I get an oil change? I would assume its a good idea since the engine is new and all and stuff is really burning off.

Did you look in the book? I assume the first change was supposed to be at 1000 and then the recommended interval is every 5000-7500 afterwards.

I didn't get my first oil change until a little over 9k miles and went on two trips that were about 2000 miles total and the car handles beautifully. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

That's not so good on a new motor! 9k are you serious!?

1500 isn't bad!

I've always done 500 on a new motor until my current one which encouraged a little more close attention!

My eyes hurt seeing you did your first change at 9000. I am a total advocate of not changing you oil too often, this idea is must be every 2000 miles is a total farce the quick change places promote to drum up business. However you so most change it the first time early. A breaking in engine produces so much bad stuff, metal shavings, that you have to change it early.

I think you are morally obligated to tell anyone that buys this car from you what you did.

I was informed that i should keep the factory oil in for a little over 3000 miles so the zink in the oil makes it's way into the block then change it every 3000. is this wrong? i have 1500 on it now so it'd be nice to know. by the way, 9000? really?

Yeah, 9K is a little much. Even under light driving conditions, the manual says 7.5K max.

Zinc is in all motor oils. It's said that factory fill is loaded with molybdenum, which takes time to plate the internals, but I dont believe Mazda factory fill has moly in it. I just cringe at the thought of how contaminated and abrasive factory fill oil is and having that circulate around. Factory fill oil has to wash up all the casting and manufacturing gunk as well as the fresh wear-in particulate.

The 2008 Mazda owner handbook does not mention or suggest the oil be changed prior to the first scheduled maintenance service. Depending on the type driving you do the maintenance schedule is to change oil every 7500miles/6months for ideal driving conditions. For adverse driving conditions such as daily stop and go it should be changed at 5000 miles.

Regarding oil, the latest engine oil is rated for service SM, with the quantity of zinc reduced because too much zinc is supposed to reduce converter life. It doesn't make sense that the initial oil would be loaded with zinc because of the contamination concern.

For what it's worth, I have purchased 12 new vehicles since 1979 and none have suggested an early oil change. That said I do change the oil early for the first change usually 1000-2000 miles. I have done all my own oil changes and the oil usually looks good when drained with no metal particles noted. I have never experienced any engine problems. I'm getting the oil changed tomorrow on my 08 Mazda 3 at around 1900 miles because I'm going on a trip next week that will include over 4k miles. I'm letting the dealer change the oil because they gave me a free maintenance agreement. I'll see how that works.

Whatever you do, make sure you check your owners manual for invoice requirements if you don't take it to the dealer.

My 2008 3 has had 3 oil changes @11,500 miles, 2 different shops. Apparently cylinder 2 died, and Mazda is basically voiding my warrantee because 2 of the receipts don't have invoice numbers on them.

INVOICE NUMBERS.

Changing the oil every 3000 miles was the norm back when oil was just oil...
Motoroil nowadays has additives that don't break down as easily and increases its life to around 5000 miles. I usually change mine somewhere between 3000 and 5000 depending on when I can get to the dealer.

Just passed 3750 (half of 7500, but planning on following the Severe Service intervals of every 5K) and I was planning to go to 5K before the first change.. Bun now I'm thinkin' maybe I'll make an appointment this week.. It's starting to idle a little low at a dead stop and the last time I checked the oil (at fuel fill-up as recommended in the manual, BTW), it looked a bit darker than the first time I'd checked it ever. :/

Thoughts?

That is unacceptable! You shouldnt have to put up with that, esp with such low miles. Forget about providing receipts, it only had 11K on it, even if the oil was factory fill@11K and the engine wasnt defective, it would have survived to do another 200K no problem. (provided nothing else went wrong). If I were you, i'd freak out on them and call headquarters or something

You'd be wise to switch out the factory fill early, and then stick with the regular intervals afterwards. The engine idling low has nothing to do with the oil, it is more than likely the result of the engine learning for the first time ie, fuel trims, timing etc. nothing to worry about, be happy it'll use less fuel at idle from hereon in :)

oh trust me, i did, and basically....from the owner of the dealership...
'So mazda has determined that they arent going to cover any of this'

Then this douchebag doesnt return my calls. But apparently something is up with my last oilchange, looks like the place i took it to may have screwed up something royal. Now if the dealer would ever return a call, i could get some info.
