Went out today, and brought a little Zoom Zoom back to the garage.

Picked up a 1992 Miata, mainly for future STS2 duty. Body's a bit rough, but it looks pretty clean for the most part.

Surprise, though: I went outside to snap a few quick pics to post and...

It's been sitting in my driveway for maybe half an hour.

Congrats again dude! That leak is behind the engine, I wonder if one of those heater core hoses let go. See if you can run your hand along those hoses to see if one of them split. Check the posts on the firewall, along with both ends on the back of the block.

Uh oh....

It looks nice, though!

...do you know what the fluid is?

From what he described to me, it sounds like old coolant.

It feels a little oily, but doesn't smell like much. It's evaporating now, so, yeah, probably coolant. I guess I'll be getting to that temp guage sensor a little sooner than expected too.

The great thing about white NA's is that with the headlights up, they look like:

Seriously, I've thought this since I saw my first white one in 1990!

I'll mess with it more in the morning. I'm too tired to try to do it in the dark and I can't find a flashlight right now.

Oh yeah...

Kevin: his temp sensor isn't getting a reading. Any ideas? It was idleing pretty high after being driven for a good while, so it should have gone into open (i think) loop mode by then and dropped the idle. I'm thinking it might be the thermistor on the back of the block, but it wasn't showing the CEL light. Should he jumper the diagnostic box to check for stored codes? What else could cause the dead gauge (besides a broken electrical connection...)

You don't really need to mess with the other hoses to do this, but if you really want, it's not exactly hard to swap out. MAYBE an hour job. You have a PM.

Congrats again, Todd. I'm glad to see another white one around :).

As far as the temperature goes, you're saying the needle isn't moving? It very well could be the sensor on the back of the head. I have one or two laying around if you want to throw one at it. It's a bit of a PITA to get to though.

I agree with Muff that the leak is likely from the heater hose on the back of the engine. If that is true, you might want to go ahead and replace the CAS o-ring. When that leaks, it drips oil onto that heater hose and deteriorates it.

If you can get that luggage rack off in one peice, you might get a fair amount for it on ebay. Mine came with one uninstalled and I sold it for somewhere over $200.

Thanks!

Yeah, the needle's not moving at all. Muff said pretty much the same thing about that O-ring.

Wow. Never would have guessed that luggage rack would be worth anything. You know any tricks to getting it off?

I've never removed one as mine was still in the box. However, I think there are a number of screws, probably conceled by covers on the top of the rack. The only problem would be the holes it leaves behind, but they can easily be plugged.

From under the trunk, it actually doesn't look like there are holes unless they're really sneaky.
