Oil Changes

Hi. I'm new to the forums and I'll most likely be buying a P5 within the next two months after I'm done saving. I was just wondering where the placement of the oil filter is on the P5 engine and if its difficult to access cause I do my own oil changes. Alrighty, thanks!

Welcome to the forum! You'll find that there's a ton here about the soon-to-be-yours P5. Tons of helpful info and helpful people too! We're glad to have you! (cool)

What color are you looking at? ATX or MTX (would recommend MTX myself). Are you planning on modding much?

As far as the oil filter goes, I run mine up on ramps and can get my hand up there to unscrew it pretty easily. I've never had a problem. Good luck with the purchase!

To answer your question, yeah, it's up under the intake manifold. Get under the car, and reach up, running alongside the block, there's a couple of bits in the way. You can get your mitts on it from under there, you can crack it free. Can be a bit odd to get at with tools. I use a pair of oil filter pliers, if it's a bit too tight. But that was only the first time I changed it, what seems like millions of miles ago. I always use my hand, now, since I don't over tighten it.

Enjoy!

Filter is located in an harder position than my RIP Nissan Altima but it's an easy task to remove it and put a new one.

I use a mazda 626 V6 filter and it's a bit trickier because the filter is longer but it takes 10 minutes to drain oil, remove filter, put the new one back on and fill it up with new oil. And drinkin' a beer...listening to Iron Maiden (rockon)

x2 on the 626 V6 filter. It allows you to use a full 4 quarts vs 3.7. I just picked up a Bosch one over the weekend - part # 3323.

first time will prolly be a biotch, but after then its nothin. i also use a 626 v6 filter, i think the 2000 model year, and put in 4 liters as opposed 3.7 the manual says.

Not too hard, you can get your hand in there to unscrew it. Or it's on tight, you can get an oil filter socket that fits on the end of a ratchet.

you guys are lucky you can fit ramps. mine are tall and I can't get my car up them without scraping the heck out of the bumper. i really don't want to buy ones that aren't as steep. i just use a jack and stands. and yea the oil filter is behind the engine. pretty easy to get to, and shouldn't be too hard to remove by hand, unless it was tightened pretty bad.

i have a ? about oil. i just changed my oil, and i notice there is some chatter under the hood that wasnt there before. i beleive this happened another time before after i changed it. I checked the oil, and the level is right, its not touching F on the dipstick, or in other words too much to were the oil bubbles as my dad told me. i think its more noticable when the car is cold, so...

Does oil have to warm up, or break in?(hand)

I got the oil from a gas station, is there a diff. in the oils from auto stores, and other places like grocery stores?

Cool. Thanks everybody and I'm glad to be on the forums. I'm just asking because I've read about people complaining of the oil filter placement. As for the PR5 that I'm planning on getting, I don't know what color it will be but it will definitely have a manual transmission for the sake of saving gas and having a little fun. Haha. But thanks again and it's great to see that there are PR5 fans from all over.

What kind of chatter is it? Are you sure it wasn't there before you did the change? Is it there at all when the car is warmed up?

Reason I ask is I'm wondering whether you might just be hearing the VTCS while the car's warming up.

Well, my vote's for Laser Blue, but I'm a bit biased :D...one thing to think about (sorry clicknext) is that the yellow P5s have paint that doesn't have a clear coat over the top (it's mixed in the paint?), so the paint doesn't stand up to the sun as well. Manual is a good choice...you'll definitely enjoy it!

Ok I win. I found the how-to on how to change your oil. And in the how-to there's a link to a video of how to change your oil and oil filter on one of our cars. :p

What weight and brand of oil did you put in red00pro? Oil does need to warm up and it needs to break in. The additives in the oil break in after a couple hundred miles but those are the cleaning agents. The viscosity is good form the get go.

Also, I have used a 626 filter and a WRX filter. I am rocking a Mazda P5 filter at the moment though.

Cold start. It happens because the oil is like honey at initial start. Let it warm up until the idle drops and then tap the gas. the chatter should subside.

Mine does that a little. Only when it sits overnight though.
