hard shifts into 4th gear, get pcm reprogrammed?

Our Mazda5 is a 2008 with 60,000 miles. It's a certified used so under that warranty right now which is good.

Anyway, it pretty much slams into 4th gear, most of the time. I had it in right after we bought it for alignment/few other issues and mentioned this. When I picked it up, they said the fluid was low so they topped it off. Heh, yeah, sure, I know better.

Anyway, I have seen the TSB on engine stumble/stall at low rpms but that's for 2006/7 models and not what our's does anyway. I plan on taking it back and getting a service guy to ride with me.

Any other advice/comments on it?

Good.

I know with my Accord, if it doesn't have Honda ATF, it shifts weird, but with Honda fluid it's perfect. I haven't heard that about Mazdas?

The fluid is a health indicator of automatic transmissions, that's why I asked. "Slams" sounds violent. Is that the only gear that does it? I think I would first try unhooking the battery for a few to reset the PCM since that controls the shift parameters.

I went by the dealer today and their transmission guy went for a ride with me. It's going in tomorrow morning for repair, a definite problem that over time will get worse. It's only the 3-4 upshift, but it just slams that shift and the whole car shudders when it does. If you are merging onto a highway at high rpms it really hits hard.

We'll get it back eventually, hopefully since it's a certified used (which nowadays just means they give you a 1 year warranty) we'll get a loaner of some sort.

Just dropped it off and got a 2010 GT with leather/everything as a loaner. If it's internal (99% sure) they'll replace the whole tranny with a reman. from Mazda. Hopefully we'll get it back soon.

Full replacement, they just have to have corporate Mazda approve it first. Meanwhile we're driving the 2010 GT and enjoying the heated seats.

Had a call this afternoon that Mazda has approved it and the new tranny should be here Wed. and it's about a day's work to r&r so we should have our 5 back on Friday.

Still waiting, an it's almost impossible to get the service department to answer the phone or call back. I drove by today and saw our 5 sitting in a long row of cars back by the service dept., it hasn't been touched. I finally on the 4th phone call got someone to answer and after a long hold was told the replacement tranny is there but not in yet.

I'm not concerned, we're putting miles on the loaner, not our's, and it has heated seats which are nice in the 15-20F weather we've got right now.

Just picked it up an hour ago and drives like it should now. $2500 was the total on the warranty sheet in case anyone wants to know.

After driving the new 2010 for 3 weeks I can tell our rear shocks are due for replacement soon.
