What kind of things to I need to be aware of when buying furniture.

ANy good well known brands and any bad ones.

Experiences welcome.

I just about to close on a townhouse, my first place and I need alot of furniture. Atlest a Living room and bedroom set plus a desk.

Help a brother out :D.

avoid the big discount stores in general (wal mart, target, kmart) as most of what they sell is fiberboard garbage. having been in retail for over 7 years, i know a little here and there about furniture.

if you are going to spend some money, spend it like you mean it - buy quality the first time around. your furniture makes a huge statement, and will take more abuse than you realize.

If I had suggestions; Marshall Fields (high end), Ethan Allen (high end), Eddie Bauer, Crate and Barrel, Sears (some of thier stuff)

If you're looking for cheap, be sure to frequent the garage sales. IMO older furniture is built better than today's crap and if well cared for can be a good bargain. The best piece of furniture in my last apartmen was a $40 couch from some old man's cellar :)

Well I have a good hook up of wood furniture localy. I got my Pine unfinished dresser that was going for $500 for $410 stained.
Not bad but still money.

I think many of you know me enough form the audio area to know I don't believe in going cheap. That is true in this situation too.

I think I most need to know where the cutoff is Between qauilty furiture and possibly paying for a name or a style I could care less about.

Is $1500 too much or to little for a decent dresser, night stand and bed set with head and foot board to support a queen bed?

Is $1500 too much for 2 couches and a table or 2?

i filled my apartment at college with ikea's stuff. im not sure if there is a place near u but i like it alot, its kind of a pain though b/c u have to put it together but at the same time provides something to do with a free weekend and a case of beer. ah to be a college boy. if there isnt a ikea store near u then they also have a mail order catologe, but if u can find one near u i suggest checking it out b/c they have a massive store with all the products on disply in set up rooms w/ all the cordinating stuff .

Oh ya and I wouldn't buy furniture form a walmart if you paid me!
The only pressboard furniture I use is entertainment centers as they don't hold much weight and take little abuse. Hell by $300 bush entertainment center has been fine for 5 years now. It won't last 20 years like a real wood one but it will hold up fine for 10 atleast..

Oh and I want a really strong bed!
(naughty)

Is it pressboard, MDF or real wood?

its not solid wood but its not like patrical board im not sure what it is to tell u the truth, they have really stylish furniture as well as contemporart stuff, im not sure if its the kind of stuff ur looking for in that its not solid wood and isnt going to last a life time but it looks badass, very cool modern designs and it all cordinates so if u find a style u like there is everything for the whole house just about to match. im pleased with it, my mom has some too in her apartment back at home.

well i work at a furniture store and i can get things a little above wholesale. uhm brands that i like most well it depends on what kind of set you would want. do you want leather? if so then omnia is a really great brand. 100 percent italian leather. uhm if fabric then like basset, schnadig, ashley. those are good brands too. for bed room sets, do not.. and i mean do not get tiger furniture. their s*** is so wack that it breaks down everytime we deliever it. for bed sets, i really like bassett. it is high quality but aico is the highest that i know that is shipped to our store. it is heavy as a mofo. a night stand of aico's can weight like 200 lbs. thats quality. but uhm yeah.

brands i recommend: bassett, aico, ashley, millenium (same company as asheley), schnadig, omnia,

brands i dont recommend: tiger furniture, stanley (its good but they use really soft and thin wood), douglas furniture (leather is cheap),

ha im actualy going to Ikea this weekend they just built a store in Atlanta that opened in june. i have heard lots of good things about that place its quallity funuture at a good price they have it all in boxes to keep the price down.

thats way too rich for my blood....i guess i'll be furnishing the house exclusively through ikea

no one mentioned Pottery Barn.

My house is practically sponsored by them.

Only question you need to ask when buying furniture, "Honey, do you like this?"

you know, you don't even have to ask that. she'll tell you what she wants.
