I have a 2002 Mazda Protege5, actually it is my girlfriends car. I love this car and am trying to find the cause of some problems she's been having.
She is the second owner of this car, picked it up in Arizona about 4 years ago. In 2011 she was driving down the highway, and the engine suddenly lost power--pressing the accelerator and nothing would happen. She pulled over, turned the car off then on again. After turning the car on again she immediately drove it to her mechanic. He looked at it, diagnosed the check engine light as a misfire, and replaced the spark plug wires. Just the wires not the coil packs.
That seemed to correct the problem.
About half way through 2012 she had a tuneup, spark plugs were replaced. Since then she started having an intermittent problem where the engine would rev high to 3k, then low below 1k, while she was sitting in stop and go traffic. Just up, down, up, down. Whenever the engine revved high the AC would blow hot air.
She has an intermittent engine lit that pops up--P0421. Which in reading the boards here would make me think the pre-cat is shot. But it doesn't explain the cause of the problem.
Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether the misfire problem from 2011 and the current revving problem could be related? Or what could be causing the current revving problem?
