Engine issues, trying to find the cause

2002 Mazda Protege5
Hi everyone,

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege5, actually it is my girlfriends car. I love this car and am trying to find the cause of some problems she's been having.

She is the second owner of this car, picked it up in Arizona about 4 years ago. In 2011 she was driving down the highway, and the engine suddenly lost power--pressing the accelerator and nothing would happen. She pulled over, turned the car off then on again. After turning the car on again she immediately drove it to her mechanic. He looked at it, diagnosed the check engine light as a misfire, and replaced the spark plug wires. Just the wires not the coil packs.

That seemed to correct the problem.

About half way through 2012 she had a tuneup, spark plugs were replaced. Since then she started having an intermittent problem where the engine would rev high to 3k, then low below 1k, while she was sitting in stop and go traffic. Just up, down, up, down. Whenever the engine revved high the AC would blow hot air.

She has an intermittent engine lit that pops up--P0421. Which in reading the boards here would make me think the pre-cat is shot. But it doesn't explain the cause of the problem.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to whether the misfire problem from 2011 and the current revving problem could be related? Or what could be causing the current revving problem?

Thanx!

Hands down, I'd say its your coil packs. I had ignition misfire issues in my MSP and the problem cleared after I changed the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the Coil Packs. I suggest you start by making sure the FPR and make sure that its not the problem and then test/replace the coil packs. If that doesn't clear your problem, check your IAC.

Thanx for the info! Where is the Fuel Pressure Regulator?

Or I guess a better question is where can I pick up a service manual for this car so that I can find some of this stuff?

=)

The FPR is located behind the valve cover to the right. It looks like a cylinder with a hat with two spouts, the top one being the vac hose and the bottom being the fuel line.

I consider coil pack replacement part of regular maintenance. I didn't wait for problems and just put in new ones.

for the year of the vehicle, since you love the car.

I recommended, get a new intake tube ( they tend to break when you least expect them to) , new coil pack, timing belt, and alt belts.
if over 100k, i also recommend oxygen sensor. always change your fluid before they are due.

i have 215k on my protege and never had an issue. never seen a tow truck.

Coil packs will cause a miss not jumpy idle or at least not as high as he says

Look into cleaning the iac. It used to be a cool thing for local Hondas to unhook their iac and it would do that

dirty EGR will cause rough idol, common problem for these cars and with the miles on his girlfriends car.. i bet it has not been cleaned once before. my money on EGR valve.

i guess what im saying is i think you had more than one initial problem, coils fixed misfire. car has had a "tune up". so to figure out rough idol im thinking dirty EGR valve. sorry double post

Replace your coil packs and also replace your EGR VALVE! i had the same issue my check engine light was on so i replaced my coil packs spark plugs and wires and also my EGR valve that solved the problem totally

Have you ever unhooked the IAC on a protege... it does not cause the idle to jump... it causes the idle to be near stalling... this is not a honda
