Cranky Pulley

Do Not get a crank pulley. Especially the Unorthodox unit. It is NOT dampened. This can cause major malfunctions with our fragile igintion system. (Crank trigger ignition)

You also want to keep a good amount of rotating mass on the crank at all times. This will aid in Turbo spool and lag as it will take that little bit longer for the revolutions to drop. Keeping your RPM's up is key making consistent boost and power.

You don't need to Rev like an F1 car to make consistent power in a Turbo car.

Just my $.02

sorry for the "noob" question, but doesn't reducing rotational mass = more horsepower? not to mention weight loss at the crank as well?

Yes,

But for a street car............ to keep a Turbo spooled or under load between gears, you should have enough weight on the crank to keep it turning.

You can end up losing gobs of torque by dropping weight off the rotating assembly.

Remember Horsepower is for bragging rights. Torque will make your car go fast.

A race application, I could see losing weight because the car is always way up in the rev's so low down is not really a concern.

yes! the more weight and stress off the crank equals more horsepower!
you will still keep the alternator and power steering pullys as well, you need them.

the way i look at it is that the factory crank pully is created in a large mass production, not being made to prefect specs all the time. thats why the even put the balancers and make them more weighted on one side.

the unorothodox pullys are made from better quality material and they are evenly balanced and weighted thats why they are not weighted more on one side or have a balancer.

as for engine damage i have not see or even heard anything about that just roomers. im not even sure how you would prove that the pully was the case.
i have installed many unorthodox pullys kits on honda and to this day they have not had any problems or even signs of problems what ever that maybe.

Well the cranky pully is on my car and i do have more horsepower and torque and i have not noticed a change of anything going wrong(yet) its been doing just fine. And i did get it from URacing. Much lighter and Much better.

I would go with the awr alternator and water pump pulley instead. Now you probally wouldnt have a problem. Another reason they use dampners is that they can also have more aggressive cam grinds. That is not the detailed explanation, but I rean this out of a grassroots motorsports and after reading the hole article decided for the whole system it isnt worth it. I would just go with the accesories pulleys from awr instead.

I think this is pretty much useless for a measly 3hp. Might as well cut holes in the floor and use Flintstone power.

i was fine with the power i had with the car when i got it, but someone"husband" decided that it needed a lil more, but since he dont have it all up there what the hell

its not all about how much horsepower you gain at peak but more depending on the power curve.
if the unorthodox pully gave 3 hp over all the intire powerband then it would totally be worth it, its only around $200.
they claim that the 2.0l protege makes about 3 hp and 3 tq max. so the 2.0l turbo will for sure make more.
