Your Top 5 Mods that the Mazda2 needs?

Yes...one of the reasons the 2 weighs less than the fiesta is they redesigned the wiring (to have less of it). Even the speaker magnets got "shrunkudid" to save weight. It was explained in a fifth gear review of the car when it 1st came out (demio) that you can find on youtube.

I guess it all adds up but, one extra switch and about 4 ft of extra wiring really wouldn't have made a difference.

If the engineers said that enough we'd being driving a Fiesta.

My buddy's 2012 fiesta only has 1 lock/unlock button, so I guess its more of a cost saving thing. And one thing I would like to add to the list of things our cars need- A/C and heat that actually work...

Lot's of weird ideas here. My choices:

1) Rear disk brakes because working on drums sucks.
2) Front undertray/skid plate because better aero (better fuel economy) and less air bypasses radiator for better cooling.
3) Better electronic throttle/cable throttle because the current setup is laggy.
4) Better gear ratios. Final drive is okay by the 1-2 shift is aweful.
5) "Real" rear suspension. E.g. multi-link with anti-roll bar.

Corksport makes a great skid tray for the Mazda2. I have one installed on my Mazda2 and I really like getting the added protection underneath the car. While the skid tray might give you better fuel economy it is probably so minuscule that you may not even notice.

Here it is, check it out...

That's strange. The heat and A/C in my Mazda2 works ruthlessly good. It will roast you out the car or freeze you in lol.

You may think that with 1 switch... but Mazda did that throughout the car. I've seen a video (I think British "5th Gear") that showed the pile of wires that Mazda threw out of the car. Lots of weight savings trust me.

Edit- Found it @ 48 secs. Gives you an idea of the amt.

I can vouch for this, I have been taking things out of the 2 to make it lighter and it is getting tough to find something heavy. The power window motors are feathers.

PRESS RELEASE

The all-new Mazda2 is the product of a lightweight mindset at Mazda's R & D community. Engineers are striving to reduce the vehicle weight of new Mazda products as a way to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while continuing to deliver the agile handling and safety attributes Mazda customers expect. The new Mazda2 is a milestone in this respect: almost 100 kg lighter than the previous Mazda2, it reverses the trend towards ever-heavier vehicles while being safer and even more fun to drive.

Engineering solutions achieved 60 percent of this weight saving, including the savings in the body shell, which has an optimised structure and uses high and ultra-high tensile steels for less weight, with greater rigidity and better crash resistance. Another 20 percent were saved by features adjustments and 20 percent by making the car's exterior dimensions smaller – while employing skilful packaging to retain generous interior dimensions.

Mazda2 engineers reduced weight by:

- use of high and ultra-high tensile steels for lighter (and stronger) body and joint reinforcements
- shortening the trailing arm of the rear suspension and giving the front lower arms an open-section design
- making the bonnet striker assembly smaller, the hinges thinner
- eliminating the underfloor catalyst (1.3-litre model)
- moving the fresh-air inlet to the top of the radiator shroud (doing away with the need for a resonator and baffle)
- making the wiring harness shorter
- changing the door-mounted speaker magnets to neodymium types and making the plastic moulding single-piece
- decreasing the length of the vehicle by 40 mm and height by 55 mm

These weight-saving measures make the new Mazda2 a trendsetter for fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions. It delivers some of the B-segment's lowest fuel consumption, from just 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle, while producing just 129 g/km of CO2.

That looks more like a skid plate for the super-low cars than anything benefiting aero/cooling. For example, the stock plastic undertray on my RX-7 goes from the front of the bumper cover all the way back past the front cross member. The oil cooler and radiator are actually sealed against it so any air entering the front of the car must pass through them. Granted, the 2's 1.5L engine undoubtedly runs cooler I would think it's help keep the engine cooler for those of you who track your 2's and the rest of us who want better fuel economy.

Mazda is offering an undertray (plastic) to increase the fuel economy. This popped up a few months back in a press release

Main features of the upgraded Mazda Demio
<dl><dt>13C-V Smart Edition II
</dt><dd>
  • Model grade name is changed from 13C-V Smart Edition to 13C-V Smart Edition II.
  • Enhanced aerodynamic performance through the employment of a rear roof spoiler and undercover result in a 0.4km/L improvement of fuel economy from 20.2km/L to 20.6km/L under Japan's JC08 mode test cycle.
  • Additional factory-installed set options
    • Advanced keyless entry (with answer-back function and automatic rear liftgate) and start system, two advanced keys, and immobilizer (approved by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism)
    • Discharge headlights with low beam auto-leveling function and front fog lamps"

Proximity keys and push-button start, and factory HIDs...why don't we ever get the good features?

Anyone know if the 6 speed from the 3 fits (with its 4.3 final drive)?
Might cure the 1-2 shift hole and improve performance...

edit: I also saw corksports sells the 4.388:1 final drive set in another thread.

I want a RWD swap kit! I guess I better get to work on that.

They have that in Forza4 :P

If they lowered the roof line a little bit more, it would probably lose some weight there. I have about 5 inches of space above my head and I am 6 foot.

To me, there is only three things the mazda two desperatly needs.
1. Short gear ratio for 2nd, I mean wth was mazda thinking making it long like this.
2. better throttle response, it is so laggy, I guess I am used to wired throttles.
3. Rear disk brakes, It will be lighter weight, and it I will pay a little more just to have rear disk, it shouldnt be that much more vs drums.

I'd go disk simply because I've never worked on drum brakes before. That and they look cooler. lmao

As for shake's comment, I don't think the trannys bolt up the same or have anywhere close to similar bellhousings, but I could be wrong.

You would laugh if you pulled the headliner, there is 2 inches above it. I have around 10 inches of clearance in the race 2 between my helmet and the ceiling.

I've been thinking lately, Mazda needs to offer a base version of the 2 (like the Mazda 3 SV or Fiesta S) so that the base price is significantly lower than the 3 and other subcompacts. They should make a version with no power locks, windows, mirrors, a/c, etc. I mean, it's meant to be a cheap car anyway. I believe this would help get more people into the dealership, and plus, if you want power options you could get a Touring model.
