Yay New Tires!

Ok so since I was fed up with the piss poor performance of the Eagle RS-A tires, and GoodYear not helping me until they hit dangerous levels, I decided to go and get new tires.

I was speechless when I drove off.(boom05)

I Can't believe it took me so long, the Ride, Ride noise, Handling All improved so much I thought there was something wrong with the car when I drove away. On the way over to Discountttire in Ventura, ON the 101 the car was shaking so horribly you would think the tires were off balance, But they weren't. On the way back, The shaking was still there but it was transmitted to the cabin so softly that it didn't bother me. Cornering stability has Gotten SO much better, so has the steering response. Now I know the Tires are very wide and look a bit ridiculous, But everything that has improved in terms of Driveability and Comfort, it really does not bother me. (cabpatch)

And the guy that sold me the tires, was such a tool. He told me that the Michlen Energy tires were Mazda Approved or something? And he was like "Is this an '06 or '07" Then as he went to the back of the car "This is a Mazda CX-7 Turbo" (lol)

Good deal on the tires but, 285/50/18? Is the rolling circumforence the same as the 235/60/18 standard tire? You should find out why your car is "shaking"?

285? wow.. I think my friend's father's z06's rear wheels only use 275's.. and 245's in the front I think...

Best tire brand and size for the CX?

What has everyone been replacing the stock tires with? Brand and size?

Its the way the freeway was designed, with ripples in the pavement, the ripples are more apparent in the CX-7. It's normal and only in Ventura county's part of the 101 going about 75 and up, But the RS-A's shook the car horribly. Now it doesn't.

And What exactly is the rolling circumference? Although they don't look like it the tires a of a much lower profile than the OEM 50 over the original 60

I Would recommend these, General Grabber UHP's or Yokohama ADVAN's, Someone on the board had replaced their tires with Kuhmo. Oh yes and out the door price was 703 dollars with a few discounts.

I was under the impression that 255 was the widest tire that could safely be mounted on the stock rims.

According to http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit
the tires are pretty close in overall diameter so the speedo is still fine.

However (and this is a big however) the minimum rim width for a 285 tire is 8.5 inches. The stock rim is 7.5 inches. There is no way I would ever get into your car. Those tires are just itching to fly off the rim.

I Will have to further look into this.. I've driven about 1K on the tires already, No problems.. Tire Rack and Discounttire both say that the Max plus zero size is 285. If I do get into an accident, me and discounttire will be meeting a lot.
Thank you.

Min recommended rim width is listed as 8" for that tire. There have been exceptions made in the past by auto and tire manufacturers for going over or under but I'm going to stick with 255/55's when I get mine.

Do you have a link for the plus zero stuff on tire rack or discount tire? I'd be interested in seeing what they have to say.

I wonder if DT was simply stating which sizes are the same diameter (or at least close enough) so the speedo stays accurate.

I couldn't find the rim range on Discount's site but tire rack puts the minimum rim width at 8 inches. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec....rtnum=85WR8CC&tirePageLocQty=&partnum=85WR8CC That's better than the 8.5 that I found on 1010tires.

I guess I would give a call to the place that mounted them and ask them. Maybe they know that the 1/2 inch is still within the margin of safety.
