WTF is up with this!

Ok, for those of you who don't know. My CEL came on the other day and I didnt know why. So I took it down to the local Mazda dealer for them to look at.

The call me back later in the afternoon and tell me that they can't fix the problem because of my CAI. :wtf: Then he told me that they are going to charge me $50. I asked him why and he said that it was because of my intake not being stock.:wtf: He then proceeded to tell me that the problem was caused by the intake!

So my dad and I went down to the dealership to find out what code the CEL threw. The CODE was 172. Which generally means that the O2 sensors were/ are running rich. Then he told us that they couldn't get rid of the CEL. AAAAAAHHHHHHH

OHH, Thats not the end of it either! Then he decides to tell me that he will be reporting my CAI to Mazda and that "if you look in your owners manual you will see that adding aftermarket parts will void your warranty!" :bs:

FU*K THAT NOISE!

I printed out part of the Magnusson Moss Warranty Act just incase I get a letter in the mail informing me that my warranty privileges are being taken away.

And if you were wondering about the CEL I got rid of it in less than 2 minutes. (Unhook negative battery terminal, press brake peddle, reattach negative battery terminal, and start car up)

Ohh, and they also blew 3 different fuses that they conveniently forgot to replace.

Sorry it's long. Just to let you know dealers screw people all over the country.

Have a nice day.

See this kinda stuff makes me hesitant to even touch my P5 performance-wise. I went thru the same crap with my Tiburon. They always gave me a hard time when I brought the car in. Anytime I got a CEL or anything else went wrong I got majorly stressed because I knew I had to deal with them! ugh
Are there any people who have the Injen and DONT get CELs?

The following are possible causes to your problem:

Missfire
HO2S (front) deterioration
HO2S (front) heater malfunction
PRC solenoid valve malfunction
Pressure regulator malfunction
Fuel Pump malfunction
Fuel return hose clogged
Purge solenoid valve malfunction
Purge solenoid hose improper connection
PCV valve malfunction

I got an Injen and have never ever had a problem .. and I never even reset the ECU either ...I even took it off the other day to clean it and still nothing so .. the car is fine I am sure .. it needed just what he did to it .. things should be fine

Warranty "Void"

Actually, manufacturers have every right to refuse to cover a malfunction under warranty if it is caused by some sort of modification (or accident).

However, an air intake modification wouldn't void the warranty on, say, the transmission, suspension or bodywork.

The only time I've heard of a factory warranty being completely voided is after a car receives a salvage title post-flood or accident.

The dealer should be able to be paid for the time they spent diagnosing the problem. If Mazda corporate somehow discovered that they paid for a repair under warranty on a part that was modified, they would likely takd the money back from the dealer... leaving them holding the bag.

It does seem a bit odd that the intake mod would cause the car to run rich... aside from an FI modification, wouldn't opening up the intake cause a car to run leaner (less gas per volume of air). Additionally, shouldn't the FI system's air-flow meters automatically match fuel flow to the increased air?

Dealers are funny like that...I have a CAI and I took it to the dealer and they said nothing but good stuff and that the car looked great. Obviously when any type of warranty is involved there is an amount of stuff that the dealer can cover before they are the on paying out of their pocket, thats just how it is with any retail type of item.
Now depending on the relationship that you have with the dealer they may leave any mechanical work that is considered the cause from a mod up to their own descretion.
But then again if you mod didnt cause it then they SHOULD fix it.

:) :) :) :) :) :)

I have had an INJEN on my car since it was about three weeks old....just turned ONE....and have never had a problem at all.....I did reset the ECU when I installed it though....but some people have...some havn't...

I am pretty sure that IF I EVER get a CEL for any reason....I will attempt to reset it before I just run to the dealer....I have not had any bad experiences with the dealer where I got my car...but then I have never had it in for service of any kind either....and the ENTIRE service department supervision has changed since I got my car too.....

It makes me wonder sometimes if service managers get some special bonus for being DICKS!!!

CELs and Mods.

When I started tweaking my old Saturn SC2, I would get CELs occaisionaly and always checked them to see what was causing the post before heading to the dealer for service. Most of the time I could correct it myself or it didn't reoccur. Over the years, I have made it a habit of noting the code, resetting it, and waiting for it to reoccur before calling the dealer. Jim

Interesting...I just put a cone filter on Pogo, and it took about 20 miles before his CEL came on. I figure it may just be because he needs higher octane gas. it smells like he's running rich and may be causing knock. I've had this problem before with the miata. My '99 NEEDED 93 octane or the CEL would come on. Granted, the manual does call for 87 octane, but I just don't know if the engine is overcompensating for the extra air...i'll reset the CEL and try 93 octane gas.

BTW, Autozone can pull the engine codes for free. Well, at least here in Austin they do. :D

yeah dealers suck! i went to my mazda dealership only to find out the old service manager is not there any more. So i was asking one of the service asissants (the guy that writes you up and takes your keys) and he was trying to bulls*** me in tell me that having a intake might make the engine run hotter b/c all the extra hp beening produced by the intake. :wtf:

he told me that new cars have computers that control everything and that the intake is putting more air into the engine and is going to screw things up. It will make the engine running hotter and decrease the life of the engine :bs:

And i asked him. say my trany break tommorow, would you guys waranty that. this is what he said "Well we would have to check it out and if in any remote way the intake could have caused the problem then we will not cover it.":wtf: So i said "come on the intake isn't going to cause the tranny to break."

You know what he said "Well the intake has increase the hp the engine is making and putting more stress on the trany. So we might not cover it.":bs:

i tried to to keep a straight face while he was telling me this. It was to funny. oh well

what a ****** liar...complete bulls***! This guy is not only a stingy prick bastage, but he's also insulting you auto-intellect!! if it were me, I would lay it on him! and he'd never expect that from a girl...heh...more air causing stress on the transmission....

well i was sitting there arguing to with the guy when i desided to let it rest. it wasn't worth agruing. i was trying to the guy. I understand if the filter pops off and a rock is sucked into the engine or if i suck water into the engine and it stops working then of course it's my fault, but if my crankshaft snaps or i throw a rod tomorow that not caused by the intake. and he still tried to tell me how the engine is running hotter b/c of the extra hp from the intake and that is putting more stress on the engine. I was thinking to myself. hmmmm does he even know what a rod is or what a crank shaft is. (rofl)

also he told me that my car is running lean do to all of the "extra" air beening sucked in. that was when i desided to stop agruing b/c this guy has no clue.

i have a 100k extended warranty that i am probally going to cancell and get my money back. that would be great take they will take my money and tell me to go f*ck myself when something goes wrong with the car then. damn these people are smart.

and the sad part is that the first service manager was mad cool and didn't give me any beef about the intake. oh well life's a b****....then you marry one. (no offence mazdaspeedgirl)

thank you. i try. (drinks) the funny thing is that most people talk out of there ass about cars and it's soo funny when you start to ask them question and they try to answer them and make them feel like idiots. (guns)

lol...don't worry about it sweetie. Like i have said before, I am not an unrealistic mutha fucka....99% of women turn to icy bitches when you marry them. Why? I dunno...and i don't know why they think their p***y is oh so holy...just give it up, fools! Hell more women would be kool if they wouldn't deny themselves the amount of sexual pleasure that they deeply desire...they're only screwing themselves...

oops, sorry...went off on a rant. I have all guy friends and have seen too many of them waste their time with b****y women who don't put out enough...heh...

Oh yah, back on topic: I love it when you bust someone trying to be a know it all about cars...they either change the subject or start asking u questions...lol! I work at an auto parts store and I can't tell you how many guys get all glassy eyed when I start chatting about cars with them...or better yet give them advice on what they need to do. the other girls that work there don't know much about cars...shame, they're so pretty too. :)

oh and DUDE!! NEVER buy extended warranties at the time of purchase!! unless you are a total dunce when it comes to cars...seriously, everyone I know that has have had problems with getting the full credit back for the warranty even though they weren't even close to running out of the manufacturer's warranty! They screw you only to get more profit from you. And they'll tell you that extended warranties cost more after you've bought the car, but they don't!

Sorry, but I have sold cars before and know how it works. Oh, and the 0% interest, 0 payments/1 yr deals? those people are going to seriously regret doing that--it's financial suicide. You end up being stuck with a car for 6 years that will always have thousands and thousands of dollars worth of negative equity. the salesmen even ADD markup to the bottom line and try to hide it from you!

I never sold Mitsu-bombs, but an aquaintence who did bragged about putting a guy into a Galant, rolling 8K worth of negative equity from his trade, and adding a 5K markup!! A $25 Galant ended up being a 40k car. When the guy came back and changed his mind, they already ran his credit and had his signature on the paperwork; they said "sorry, but the car is yours."

I'm curious, did the instructions say to do so SirNuke?
:)

I've put two K&N filters in two different cars and nowhere in the insturctions did it say to reset the ECU. I called K&N Support and they told me that you must reset the ECU to make it comprehend the new air flow as it could not do it automatically (OBD I & II). I'd say that it's a small price to pay (having to reprogram your stereo) to get the ECU operating properly. Jim

My mom is all about waranties. and trust me she collects and make the companies fix it!!!!!! But i don't know....i got the warranty b/c i put about 25k+ on my car a year. so the orginal warrenty would last me about a year and a half. and i wanted the car warrentied at least till i got out of college. but i am thinking i should have taking the 2k i spent for the 100k/5 year warrent and just put it in the bank as a "broken car fund" to be used to fix the car when i breaks. i will try to get my money back.
