winter set up

I just got my speed 3 but the sales man said that the car has summer tires. I live in central jersey so its dropping below 50 already. Is it worth buying all season tires? I heard i need to swicth the rims to so any advice would be appericaited. my brother works at a tire center so changing it shouldn;t be a problem but I just a little confused on what I need to change

i do have a 2002 ford explorer so should i just use that for my main driving(school/work less than 15 miles each way)and use the mazda for going out when the weather is somewhat decent to save money

I would drive the explorer. If you plan on buying new tires, get winter tires. The downside is that the car has tpms so you will need to install a sensor rebuild kit for each tire you change out on the wheels, or you will get a tire pressure warning light every time you drive. This doesn't affect the car, it's just annoying.

I bought a set of black steel wheels and a set of winter tires so I can just have them changed in the fall and in the spring. All season tires on a speed 3 defeats the purpose of the speed 3. It's just not going to perform and handle the way it was intended.

You shouldn't drive the MS3 if the temps are wintery if you keep the OEM tires on. The OEM tires will be loose grip in cold temps (not to mention ice or snow). I have a set of Borbet wheels w/ Conti ExtremeWinterContact tires for cold weather, which I coincidentally mounted up today.

As for the TPMS thing, Ryank401 is right that the dash will display a warning light unless you get wheels w/ TPMS sensors. I'm too cheap to have had those installed w/ my winter set-up, but I check my tire pressure regularly, so I'm not too worried.
