Wide Auto-x Tires - 245/4X/17

Yeah, I watched Brian's runs this weekend. I wouldn't say he was outdriven by the other drivers. Unfortunately he may have been outcarred!

Sorry if I caused any confusion!!! I posted that you were on a 45 offset which is obviously wrong. I recalled you guys saying that you could be 5mm off legally and that was all you had done. I always assumed/knew the MSP's to be a 48/50mm offset so I assumed you were at 45... didn't know any of our cars came at a 55 offset. Regardless, all that was important to me was that it was possible to get a 245 width race slick on these cars without serious fender alteration.

And yeah... these guys had to race against some serious competition. Our region is known for a lot of very good drivers and DS is actually one of the classes we have some good ones in. Bob Clark in the 325i is known to be a good driver and also very good at setting up his car and so forth. So these guys were running against some very tough cars and drivers... I also believe that they had times within 2 seconds of my car if not even less and that I think further proves two things... 1) I have a lot more to learn and drive better and 2) Macs and his codriver can definitely drive.

Something you also have to consider is that sometimes tires run wider than the numbers on the sidewall show. I know that the Falken Azenis run slightly wider than the numbers say and I remember hearing Hoosiers do the same.

LOl...you had to run against Kugler. That's a hUmbling experience in any class.

Andy Lieber and Jared Hoops are other good drivers in a fast car that are tough to compete against.

As for DS, this was the closest I could get to the Nationals pack without going to Nationals. I don't think I'll ever get the MSP into the top three or four spots but I could get a lot closer than I was in Milwaukee. John Tak and I did better in Peru, and that had to do with a better set up. I tried different brake pads for Milwaukee to try and reduce the "Ice Mode" issue but I made it worse. Not only did the I have "Ice Mode" but I couldn't stop either. I almost tossed in the towel and gave up on the car for good until someone said I can't drive. It pissed me off and made me realize I can't quit now. Now I just need to figure out where to get another $3K to finish the car (wet build and Kosie K1TS wheels).

Yeah... I knew that i had a batch of some of the best in my class and that Evo and Civic were well prepped cars. That's why I do the national tour events because it gives me a good chance to gauge myself against good drivers. I had hoped to be within about 3 seconds of them and on the first day I was close... if I had been within 1 second of them I would have s*** a brick as that would have shown that I'm getting close on setup and driving. I wasn't so I know I have more work to do. I think I can get the MP3 to be surprisingly competitive and do well locally and divisionally, but don't have much allusion for nationals. My plan is to probably go to SS in 3-4 years and buy and build the car specifically for that class and that class alone (I'll consider AS or BS though as well, but I like fast :) ).

And considering my car is not on the right size rims and tires, not corner weighted, not lightened, and running only the MSP LSD and not a Quaife yet... there is lots and lots of progress to be made with it.

Yeah, I have all the tread and section width numbers accounted in my calculations as well. the hoosiers run really wide on section width (about a good .7 over the Kumho's) so that is being contemplated as well :)

Steve, your car seemed to have a bit more body roll than the top SM guys, at least in my corner of the course.

At least you beat the Tacoma!! (first)

Van

I need to get the CG a bit lower, I'm running more clearance than I need really. I also have the stock sway bars on the car right now which I think is sufficient. I'm reading some suspension books to figure out the best routes to go. I may pre-load the springs to a higher level or put in a stiffer spring in order to reduce some of that roll, but yeah, I know the car rolls a bit and it lifts the rear tire sometimes as well during hard cornering.

The one honda only beat me by a small margin and only because of my horrendous performance on Sunday. I had a good lead on him before I sucked it up Sunday.

Alrighty... so I took a bunch of measurements tonight and did some fit checks with my current rims etc. It looks like I'll have to go with the 8" rims with the 42mm offset. I'll likely pick up some 1/8" spacers (4mm) and use those as well and switch to a slightly longer ARP wheel stud if I can. It looks like the ideal offset on my setup would be about 35 or 37mm but the rims that I checked out that are low weight don't have that. I feel reasonably comfortable with using such a thin spacer. Basically the 28mm would give me the extra room I need/want but will run in to the outer fenders it appears. My current 7.5" rims at a 45mm offset at -3 in the front and -2 in the rear gives both front and rear about a 4-5mm clearance to the struts and about 1" to the fender in the front and about 3/4" to the fender in the rear. I think I may also grab some 1/4" spacers to allow for some different configuration attempts... otherwise I'm going to try to keep an eye out for some rims that would fit my needs... but 20 lb rims nearly at the right offset for 136 a pop shipped is worth the extra hassle I think.

Definitely going to need to do some fender rolling though...

Don't roll the rears. Just cut the little lip completely off. That extra few millimeters works wonders.

What'd you do for rust proofing? I was hoping to also be able to actually bend that final flange out a little bit as wel to gain just a few more millimeters as well... so may cut it and then also use a roller on it to try to gain a little more if I need it.

Also, did you run a longer stud at all when you had wheel spacers on previously? Anyone know where you can get some? granted even at 1/4" I shouldn't be too bad, but I want to make sure I have the option covered if I need it.

Very Long studs ARP-100-7708.

Need open end lugnuts and the studs stick out past the wheels.

I haven't sprayed the insed lip yet. I need to just mask it off and hit it with a little flat black. I don't have quite the issue that you have up in WI.

I used the studs that Moxnix mentions. I have an 8mm spacer on the front right now.
