Why not a Miata?

I liked my Miata a lot more than I like my Protege. With two kids and my wife back to working, we both need cars that can carry both the boys in it. Don't geet me wrong, the Protege 5 is a great car and I like it a lot but if you don't need the extra seating and cargo space the Miata is a much more fun car to drive.

If you don't mind the fact that you can't even go to the market in one (unless it's a milk-run), then get one already.

i have no problem fitting my gf's weeks worth of groceriec in my miata. hell and i even keep a jacket and the boot and books back there.

Is it just me or is the majority of miata owners balding white men?Thats what i see usually driving miatas.

Id still take a Mazdaspeed miata tho. I don't like the brand new ones tho.
Well, if you are over 6' tall the exposure will make you bald soon enough!

We've got one of each and it works out beautifully. Oh, and he has hair to his waist. ;)

If you have the cash to buy a Miata outright, I'd do that and keep the P5.

I'd get one, go ahead.

You'd definitively need snow tires in the winter, though.

I found out that my Toyo Proxes T1-Rs did alright in the snow/ice here (more ice than snow in Okiehoma)...or maybe it was my mad driving skillz y0 (rockon)

Ok, you might slip by with a receding hairline then.

Or you could wear a racing helmet all the time.

O s***. you just reminded me of my friend with a 240sx. He would pull out this Miami Dolphins football helmet and put it on before he raced someone at a stop light. lol After they saw him put on the helmet they usually didnt wanna race no more lol lol.

That's cool, but I think he sees more snow in Rochester and northwestern CT than Oklahoma. And if you're dealing with ice it doesn't matter what tires you have anyway (unless you use studded vs non).

Get the Miata, and you'll forget all about what you can't do in it.

When I bought my P5 it was because my MR2 wasn't reliable, or large enough. I bought the MSP because the P5 wasn't fast enough. Every single bit of the logic about functionality went flying out the window when I test drove my MX-5.

I know my wife wants kids, so they're likely in the future at some point. When I told her I was considering trading the MSP for a miata she gave me the "are you crazy" look... once I took her for a spin in it and dropped the top about halfway through the test drive she looked over at me and said "You're TOTALLY getting this car!"

You also wont get asked to help other people move their crap anymore.

.... oh wait. I was supposed to talk you out of the miata... DOH!

other reasons not to get a Miada:
1) you'll have to buy a heavy winter coat so you can drive with the top down in the winter.

2) And you always seem to end up taking the long way to wherever it is you're going.

3) somehow in your weekends you never get anything done, because you spent 2 days 'getting lost' in the mountain backroad.

4) you spend days and days researching tires so you can have the best you can for your driving style.

I think right about now the only thing stopping me is that I could buy ChiMSPs yellow MSP for less than what most places around here want for an 02 Miata with 30k miles on them... and he's got a forged motor. damn miatas having great resale value :(

Well, just give it some good thought. Both are awesome cars and i can't hate on the miata. Do your homework and see whats best for you and do what makes you happiest. Buyer's remorse is a b****... you dont wanna look back and say, "i wish i could've done_____". Although i know you wont regret buying my MSP ;)

Why buy a newer one? Just get a 94-95 and be happy. As much as I love my Protege, even as fast as you could get Sams to go, there's just nothing like driving a small, RWD, open top car. If I could fit easily enough to drive it daily I'd probably have an old one as a beater, but I'm too big.

I think I'm going to test drive one once the roads are clear, the one I test drove last summer felt really crappy for being an 02 with 40k miles (at the time I had 55k miles on my 02.5 and it felt so much tighter in terms of shifting/sterring).

And as for going to a 1st gen. I don't know if I could go back to having a car that old after having a 2002. Do any of the 2nd gen miatas have side airbags?

I have to keep reminding myself that I'm old enough to be probably the father of most of the people posting on this forum (hence my screen name...)
When I was in my early 20's I wanted nothing more than a Triumph TR-6 or a Lotus Elite...wound up with a '66 Mustang(God I miss that pile of junk...)
Go for the Miata, screw the practicalities. Drop the top, get sun burn.. Go For It !
Looking out the windscreen of the wife's Miata I can't help but think I'm looking over the hood of a Spitfire (airplane) (leave it to the Japanese to out Brit the Brits!)
You are only "young" once... go for the Miata!!!
