Who's blown their MSP motor and why?

One thing I love about the msp since day one, is that when cruising on the highway and want to pass, 5th gear has always had plenty of response.

Since installing the mpi tuner and upping the boost a little...1/2 throttle in 5th is simply amazing.

Now reading this makes me worried because this subject is exactly what I do constantly...the thing is I never punch it but more like press throttle as the momentum of my rpm's increase. The response is very quick...I just love it!

I run mobil1 5w30 all year round, stock plugs gapped to 30 and I boost 7-8psi. I run it hard at least once or twice during the day.....am I possibly the next one to blow my motor?

7-8psi should be okay at half throttle ... where you have to be careful is once you go to like 10-12psi using stock injectors, half throttle can be dangerous (from what i've seen on my car). Make sure the middle part of your MPI map is rich enough because that's where it was the leanest on my car before i adjusted the mpi map. It then starts to lean out at 5000rpm @ 10 to 12psi on stock injectors.

If you pay attention to those 2 conditions, i think you'll be ok

bent 2 rods after a year and a half of running the car at 12psi daily and 14 psi on the weekends with race gas. ill admit i wasnt easy on the car as it saw the governer 3+ times daily and the rev limiter all the time between shifts
(no lift shifts=fun)

I think I'm getting old or something... I don't mash on cars like I use to. I like to have fun on the weekends, but that daily abuse just isn't there anymore. I probably shouldn't be too concerned w/ my engine. heh

I do drag race though, but don't think I will be this year with it. We gotta get that Colt running.

s*** i feel bad for your car

spun a bearing, rods bent and other s*** demolished and i ended up with nice holes in the block. mods at the time: CAI, and s-pipe back exhaust. Stock boost. No driver errors. No boosting in 5th. No boosting at low rpm. Supposedly lack of oil changes.

There are way to many variables to consider when a msp engine blows. One thing I would like to know is what spark plugs and gap were being used. Also, oil change intervals, driving (gear, rpms) at the time of blown engine.

Bearings spin because of lack of lubrication.. Alot of the time people don't consider that when your driving a car thats equiped with forced induction, the oil changes and basic maintenance needs nearly doubles. I change my oil every 3-4000kms whether it looks clean or not. So do all my other friends that drive Turbocharged cars.

or maybe we just love our motors too much :P

Yep... that's another thing. Every 3000 miles religiously. Royal Purple since 3k miles on the car.

motul here ... when possible.
gets expensive but still less than another blown engine

You change synthetic oil every 3k? What the heck for?

I havent changed my oil in like 5-6K miles. lol i just keep adding oil and keeping it full whenever the oil level goes down.

I'm about to change the oil in a few days, so if my engine blows soon after, I'll know why.

that's what i'm wondering. i can see if you are using regular dino oil that you need to change it that often. but using synthetic, you can get away with changes every 5000 miles or a bit more on a turbo car. also, as long as you check your oil levels inbetween changes, you'll be fine. if it's a little low, just add some oil. no need to change it until the next time.

mine gets changed every 2500-3000 miles with mobil1 and a mazda filter. i carry 1qt of mobil1 in my trunk at all times just incase. my reason: being in the automotive service industry, i have seen WAAAAY too many motors sludge or have mechanical problems simply due to lack of oil changes or being late on changing consistantly. i drive my cars hard, so in turn i take extra care on maintaining them

I had an 89 corsica that I used to just beat the piss out of everyday (not even words can describe how bad I beat it, maybe just short of a demolition derby car) and it just kept going. I chained it to a truck and did burnouts and many neutral drops and barely ever changed the oil cuz I added about 4 quarts every 3k miles and it never complained. When I finally got rid of it, it still started, I stopped with about 1.5 brakes, the rings were toast and it blew smoke really bad, but it wouldn't DIE! I wish our protege's where built with that kind of dependability.

Oh well, guess I'm anal that way. Every 3k miles on synthetic for me. Car has 48k miles, been boosting at 10 spiking to 13 sometimes 14 since about 5k miles on the car. No ems. Actually, gonna be putting the DSM AFC in pretty soon, tired of the hesitation. Mind you, I have the supporting mods, i.e. exhaust, fmic, cai, bpv, plugs (NGK ZFR7F-11 -> change every 10k miles).

Honestly it's just throwing money away if you change synthetic every 3k. Oil filters at 3k? Sure, but def not oil.

Chances are you won't even have this car 5 years from now. Issues caused by lack of oil changes present themselves way later down the line LONG after the original owner had it. I'm not saying to trash your car because you won't have it in a few years, but its nothing but a waste to do excessive preventive maintenance.

Not to mention the 3k mileage thing is suggested by oil manufactures and dealerships, right? Why do you think that is? ;)

$20 bucks for oil and $5 for a filter is not a big deal when you consider how much it would cost to replace your engine. Sure synthetic is engineered to last longer on average than regular oil, but I like the peace of mind of frequent oil changes.

Its hard to say exactly why some of these motors blow. Sucks for sure if it happens to you.
