I am getting my cams and pistons very soon but im not sure what pistons to get... would any of you reccomend the Stock FSZE pistons for $180 , or the Mazdaspeed pistons for $120?

i think the fsze compression is 10.5:1
and the Mazdaspeed is 10.7:1...

with that small difference i dont think i would be able to tell the performance difference...

and i dont have a ton of experience with pistons, so would daily driveability be affected with the higher compression and cams?

what kind of performance do you think i may have around?
im guessing around 170-180??? hopefully...

i want to be in the 15's in the quarter mile...

I would go for the Mazdaspeed ones not too much more compression but will give you a little more umph and they are 60 bucks less so they are goign to be the best bang for the buck you are goign to get.

quick question on Higher compression. i know with higher comressiong you have to run higher octane fuel to prevent dentonation. but we are already running 91 octane. does anybody think we are going to have a problem running our ecu mods and higher compression on 91.

I wouldn't mess with changing pistons unless you can get forged flat tops, and reprogram the ECU. I mean, that's a lot of work for not that much improvement, and you won't see FZ output levels without FZ ECU programming. If I were you, I'd just do the cams for now. That's just my 2 cents worth.

BTW, I'll buy your old cams for a resonable price when you're done.

A flat-top piston would be good for a turbo app on our engines but the high compression uses a bump top. Unless he is planning on going FI in the future then flat-tops would do him no good.

If he decides to up the compression he would be fine using 91, but luckly in Michigan which is where he's located, they have 94 octane. I kinda miss that about Michigan. But even for us 91 octane users, we could also buy an aftermarket ignition system and different plugs. Which I'm sure will do the job. Either way you look at it, in order to do extreme damage like snap a rod, or melt a piston, you'd have to be running extremely tight clearances. If you tune wrong.....this could happen to you.
