Which turbo would you choose ?

So i'm changing my turbo soon, hopefully during the winter to have everything ready for the next season. I was wondering what my options were. I've done a bit of research on alot of different turbos but i wana see what you guys think too

so here are the best options so far:

1- I could buy Focus' GT28RS and just put it on. Flows a max of about 350hp and is apparently the fastest spooling turbo in it's cathegory

2- There's the GT25/40R which has a huge compressor. 4" inlet and 2.5" outlet, will let me run an external wastage and at the same time, gain on the exhaust side of the turbo. T25 type flange but I was told yesterday that the compressor is too big for the stock location, so i'd have to have a new manifold made. Flows up to 450hp

3- GT303071R, biggest of the 3, flows up to 500hp, T3 type flange, id also have to have a manifold made.

I know this all depends on what i want to do with the car, but i'm looking for the best solution ... i was thinking of taking the GT25/40R but Focus says that if i'm having a new manifold made, i might as well go with the GT3071R, but that GT30 is 250$ more

Is getting an external wastegate really worth it ? I was told that in doing so, you gain about an inch / inch and a half on the exhaust side of the turbo, making your downpipe and exhaust gas flow more efficient. I don't wana spend TOO much money, but i don't wana buy a turbo and change it again later so if i have to spend money on something, i wana do it right the first time.

Those are the turbos i know of .... i'm not too familiar with the 16G and other turbos you find in EVOs or STIs and other turbo cars. So let me know if you know of another turbo that is worth considering. Nothing too small, i'm going for around 400whp and maybe more so i guess that means the gt28rs is out)... if at one point, upping the boost is all i have to do to reach 500, i will do it. Hopefully, i will reach my goal within 2 years. I'm planning on getting the turbo/manifold done this winter, set of pistons/rods and see how that goes ... then really work on the block next winter and go over 400whp the next summer.

Let's try to keep this thread as informative as possible ... a which turbo to choose guide would be nice =) I looked aroudn on the forum, pretty much everybody talks about the GT28RS, there's a few posts here and there about different turbos, so id like to gather as much info as possible on the different turbos availlable to help people like me who want to change their stock turbos and are wondering what is availlable out there.

I personally wouldnt swap turbo's untill you max out your current setup/turbo. I have been really impressed by some of the # people put out with the stock turbo. If you are just looking for a winter project, then i guess i understand that.

The gt28rs seems the best option for our engines. I personally would be plenty happy with 250-300whp so that fits right in that range.

What are your plans for the car... any road racing, autoX, or just drag? is it your daily driver? to me a 250whp protege is all i would ever need, but i guess it depends on preferences. It starts to get expensive really fast, as im sure you already know.

We have the manifold to fit either the GT2540R or the GT30R. It will take the Tial 38mm wastegate. It is cast iron and it carries a lifetime warranty.

PM me for any additional information.

definately the GT28RS. it has even been said by multiple magazines that this is the best spooling turbo for normal applications (normal as in not 12349087374hp supras).

dude just get like monsterous turbo you can fit your head in..Whenever you open your hood just be like yo..check that s*** out..then stuff a grape fruit in it for effect.

the way i see it, pistons/rods automatically means that the stock turbo has to go because it wont really do more than 15psi, so the next step would be GT28RS, but i know that in the future, that turbo will not be enough as it only flows up to 350hp. i know that's already alot, but i'm going for more. so instead of buying that turbo now and changing it again in the future, i thought about doing it all in one shot.

I may have to wait to buy a more expensive turbo with the added cost of a manifold, so maybe i'll get the 28 for now and change it next year ... i dont know. i thought id ask here to see what kind of turbos are availlable. i only know about those 3 turbos but i'm sure there are alot more

i will drive that car around but i have another car for winter. I know that a 400whp car might not be the best choice for daily driving, but the boost can always be turned down. Mine right now must have between 200 and 220whp and its great to drive, i cant imagine having 400whp all the time. So all that power would be for drag racing, then turned down once we leave the track.

i'm planning this over a 2 year period so i might not get the bigger turbo done this winter. Maybe i'll just concentrate on getting the internals done and making sure everything in and around the engine is ready for major boost

Get this one!

on the atp home page they have a GT3071 WG that bolts up to our T25 manifold. This is what i'm looking at.

maybe you should consider putting the thumper kit from MAM on your car.

guys i'm being serious. dont use this thread to up your post count by posting stuff like "get a turbo big enough to put your head in it". I'm all for having fun but i'm also looking for info, please =)

Brian: that's almost what i have in mind ... but i'm concerned about the lag associated with that turbo hehe

thanks Juan, i will look for more info on your manifold. that might save me from having to have it custom made.

Sounds like a good plan. Get your car running great with new internals and your new EMS, run 15-18psi on the stock turbo. Then upgrade once you know everything is running good, and reliable. Building the engine is gonna cost a pretty penny, and there are lots of hidden cost in doing it. If you know the gt28rs wont fullfill your future plans, wait it out, and get the gt30, or by the time your ready, there will probally be a newer/better turbo for your application.

txrxs: i was told that the T25 flange is a bit more restrictive compared to a T3 type flange ? any idea if that's true ?

i'm not sure exactly which part of the turbo he was talking about, but it came up to "the T3 style is better than the T25 one"

Matthew, Beau's kit is what made me start thinking about this. It looks GREAT but i wanted to see if there were other options. I spoke to Beau already

i'm not doing this next week anyway so i'm trying to learn as much as possible a bout the whole thing before i start spending tons of money. I don't wana have to redo things over because of bad information =)

the t3 is bigger so it is going to flow more at less boost (ex - 6psi on a t3 is more hp than 6psi on a t25). however, a smaller turbo such as the gt28rs will spool much faster. with my t3 on my old spool kit, it took forever. with my gt28rs im fully spooled by the time my old turbo was beginning to spool almost.

i understand, and i responded in length to your pm.

Juan, i have a question about your kit. I see that your GT30 setup has the turbo higher than the stock location. Would that be a problem if i were to lets say, put a fiberglass hood ? Any problems related to the heat generated by the turbo ?

Spicy, i know =) i liked the grapefruit idea too hehe

Matthew, thanks that's good info .... i guess it depends on what kind of lag exactly you're talking about. i know that a bigger turbo will never spool up as fast as either the GT25 or 28. right now, i get about 10psi of boost by the time i reach 2500rpm (tested in 3rd gear from about 1000rpm) but if i have to wait till 4000rpm to get 10psi on a GT30 ... that's fine by me. Cuz like you said, 15psi on a GT25 is no way near as much power as 15psi on a bigger GT30. what kind of lag were you getting with your old setup ?

I've seen an H22 Prelude make its tire spin in 4th gear with a GT30. it takes a little time before the turbo spools up but its great once it kicks in
