Which Headers Are Available for P5's?

Macdaddy...
Did you also get a gasket and bolts with the header? I ordered mine from mitch also (someday it will be shipped after his holidays), but not sure if I need anything else. I got the mil cheat ordered, but not sure about gasket and bolts. I'd rather put in new bolts when taking the old ones out. Any idea if the bolts with this header are the same size as for the awr? (that way can get dimensions from book).
Gasket?

No hardware included with the header. Should be okay using exisiting.... I see no reason not to. The manifold / head gasket is 2-layer stainless steel. the bolts / nuts shouldn't be rusted or seized. The doughnut gasket at the rear flange is fairly heavy duty as well.

Do as you want, I plan to re-use what I've got.

Update

Just to let everyone know. I did the header install last Thursday, it's more of a job than I expected.... especially on an automatic car. Bottom line is the header I received from AWR did not fit to my liking (EGR pipe on the header was misaligned, would not fit without major bending.) I spent the better part of the day talking with Tony from AWR, trying to come up with ideas on how we could easily make it work. No dice.

Tony is sending me another unit next week. I took lots of pics at install time, but not releasing them yet. I'll make sure and take pics again when I get the new piece. Tony gained valuable information from the pics I sent him, so units sent from here on in should be a direct fit without problems. Remember folks, this is a new product for him, and it's still a bit of trial and error.

Please don't get discouraged. This will work! I'll do a write-up on the install as well, after the new one is in. There is quite a bit of work to be done to get this thing in the engine bay.. but it's doable. One piece headers are not as easy as a two piece unit, that's for sure.

Keep the faith,
Jim

What are some of the power gains with the AWR header? I have a Mp3 is there going to be any noticable power gains?

I have no idea. They have no dyno results (actually they're waiting on me to provide them.)

Any FS 2.0L will benefit from a free flowing exhaust manifold. I'm hoping to see ~ 7-10 HP.

Dyno results soon.....

Sorry to hear you had problems Mac. I was told each unit was fit checked before it was shipped, but that clearly wasn't the case. Install wasn't that bad for me. I fly cut the flang first thing based on the look of it alone. Once I got it in and saw the EGR fit I went down to the plumbing supply and got some tubing and and bent a new smaller line for about $15. Other than that its a nice unit, light weight, nice bends, clean welds and big tubes.

Much to my surprise there as been no MIL yet either, and that I do not understand. My butt says it didn't make a real big difference, but now I can install those custom ground cams and do some tuning. That's where the difference will come in. The center pipe section with second cat is going to need replaced soon too. It's now the choke point. The sound is bitchin with the JIC exhaust.

Zeus -

bulls*** on the fitment before they leave... that I can assure you on.

Hope this one fits like a glove... it better! :D I'll try and get it on Friday night / Saturday morning if it comes in time.

Good to hear about the lack of MIL / CEL without a fix. Really didn't matter to me, but that's an extra $20 I don't have to spend.

Take care,
Jim

So are any of the other header's actually shipping? I think the general sentiment around here is that people have a)given up on headers and have gone FI or b)given up on headers and worked on their suspension or appearance. All these manufacturers are dragging their feet on these and I don't think they should be surprised that they don't sell because they have been essentially forgotten

the AutoEXE header is shipping... and isnt the MAZDASPEED header also shipping?

Talked to Tony today..He is shipping my header TODAY!!:D
Should be here Monday. Not sure when I will be able to install it, though.
I will keep you posted.

Just thought I'd bring this topic back as there is another header choice available those of us with 2.0L engines.

Essential Speed is a Canadian speed shop. Over the last few years they have been building turbo applications for imports (one of our guys in the toprotege.com club is on his second version of their turbo).

He's also been offering a shorty style header for the last year or so (probably one of the best kept secrets) which retains the precat and has provisions for both o2 and egr.

Here's a looksie at the ceramic coated one:

Will have this one installed on my car shortly - will have dyno #'s to post in the upcoming weeks (my car is totally stock at the moment, so I'm curious to see what the #'s will return like...).

If you need to find out more about them, they're located on the web at www.essentialspeed.com (although, their web site is a touch on the light side regarding information).

Cheers,

*Duh*

Sorry 'bout that. Given that this is a new release of the older product (i.e. this is version 2), I'm not truly certain what the retail is on it - I'm the guinea pig for 'em and I'm getting a deal. For some reason, I'm thinking it's in around $400US...but I could be waaaaaaaaaaaay off.

Your best bet is to e-mail Kevin at Essential Speed - he'll be able to give you the correct answer.

Cheers,

Alright guys. I just emailed Kevin at essentialspeed.com and he gave me a little more info on the header and exhaust system. I don't know how much the header is without the cermanic coating.

"Essential Speed has a ceramic coated equal length header 650.00 can. plus shipping and handling.
Exhaust from header back 2.5 " dia. stainless steel incl. high flow cat, resinator and muffler 950.00 can plus shipping and handling charges.
I can make it bolt apart in more sections than normal for shipping purposes.
I can fabricate these items and ship in 2.5 weeks.
I can also include ceramic coating on your entire exhaust system for 500.00."

The 950 Canadian comes to about 699 USD and the 650 Canadian is about 478 USD. Hope this helps some.

I'm not too sure if the 699 USD is for just the exhaust, which doesn't sound realistic, or the combo of header and exhaust. I emailed him to double check.

If anyone wants to get a group buy put together for this, I'll talk to him about it. Let me know.
