When is "AWD" on tailgate?

Hi All,
I am purchasing a 2010 CX-9 GT AWD, or at least I think it's AWD. The Car Fax (based on VIN) says it's AWD, but unlike other models there is no "AWD" lettering on the tailgate.

Is there any logic behind when the lettering is on the tailgate and when it is not?

Before 2009, there was no AWD badge.
I bought one off a Volvo (font matched) from eBay.
Now, you can get one from Mazda's part department.
