I'm going to get some 17" wheels for my P5. Anyone know what I am going to be looking at paying(general)? Will I be able to get anything nice for around $700?

If you just want wheels for under $700, go rota. Try Machiii.com.
Im gonna say there's about a 95% chance that his $700 means WITH tires...but if it doesnt, then Rota is the WAY TO GO :D

sidenote. How do companies that sell wheel/tire combos so cheap do it? Most of the time you'll see something like:
" 17" XXX XXXXXXX w/ 205/40/17 tires - 700"
then it'll be like 150 per wheel for just the wheels. I dont care how cheap the tires are, I havent found any for $25 a piece ;)
must be buying in bulk that does it...Also the free shipping confuses me, when it would cost me over $100 to ship four wheels with tires.

usually the tires are crap.
but how come most retailers sell those crap tires for $80 and these ppl are putting 4 on (plus mount and balance) for $100(huh)

Check with Marty at BUYWHEELSTODAY.COM, I got 17" Koing Holes (wheels only) for $515 shipped. You should be able to stay in the $800 to $900 range with decent tires...Of course depending on how much your choice of wheels costs. Just my 2. lol

I got my wheels at edgeracing.com for $529 shipped. Tires from TireRack for $255 shipped (they charged me $3 for shipping instead of $30)

It should be very easy to get a set of wheels for under $700.

It's all about volume buying...I work in the distribution business so I know. It's cheaper for a manufacturer to ship a lot of a product rather than several smaller loads. Tirerack, etc. have centralized buying, so they purchase for the whole company, but charge about the same as other people. Therefore their profit margin is pretty high. But, all those extra services cost money, so that eats into their profit.

I imagine that the cost on an $80 tire is somewhere around $25-30 dollars, so they basically give then to you at cost when you buy wheels. But they've already made a decent profit on those wheels, so they still end up ahead. Also, all large distributors have accounts with major shipping companies, so their cost is considerably less than what you or I would pay to ship from our houses. Again, it's all about volume.

If I ship say 300 sets of wheels and tires every day the whole year, UPS is going to give me a better deal than someone who ships one set of wheels only once. Volume = discounts...it's that easy.

I got my wheels and tires from wheelsnext.com. Tires are Kumho's and the wheels are 17" adr sokudos. Shipping took 5 business days. The site is misleading, though. They say you get free shipping, but when you order, they charge you 100 for mounting, balancing, locking lug nuts, etc....but I think it was a great deal anyway. A local dealer wanted $1000 for the exact same thing.

Try not to do the sophmore thing and spend $200.00 a wheel and then turn around and get "lowest bidder" tires. Many people buy those packages with wheels/tires for the low price, and the tires are a "Cool Looking Size" but downright awful. Tires are the single most important thing you can do to improve how your car feels/drives/handles. Don't skimp on the part of your car that actually connects your car to the rest of the world. :)

Check e-bay. I picked up a set of NIB 17" ADR Battle EXEs, 40mm offset, for $380 plus shipping from Anthony Nguyen's GT Sport in California. These wheels retail for $187/ea.

Helluva deal, no? (thumb)

Awesome deal but 40mm offset will not fit quite right on a Protege, especially a lowered one. See Rishie fitment quide for proper fitment, +42 is pushing it for most wheels. +45 will give you proper clearance with any set of springs and tires.

i have a 17x7 40mm offset with a 2054017 falekn tire. im lowered on eibach and have no rubbing issues. if i dropped it more i could see it rubbing

That's cool  your the first success story I have heard with 40mm offset.

im amazed. if i go lower im gonna roll my fenders and if falken comes through with my 19"s im gonna shave the fenders. of course the 19"s will have a 42 offset.

This might be just for your style wheel. I have had people e-mail me complaining that they have rub issues after installing eibach with 42mm and under wheels. It could be there tires to though. There are to many variables to consider. I went +48 with my wheels and I could set mine on the ground probably:D.
