Whats the best turbo kit for the money on a MP3??

I know the Spool is the cheapest Ive seen for the stage one. Would I need anything else for this kit to get it goin? I want to point out I know nothing about turbos but I have a mazda mechanic that will help me install everything. But I want to know if I should buy the spool kit or save and get one of the others? I m also looking for the most user freindly kit too. Thanx guys

Well, that really depends on what you want out of your turbo. Remember, you're probably going to want to upgrade that kit. If you can hold off a little while you could get whatever kit you'd want. In my opinion all the kits are equally as "user friendly" as possible. The difference with the spool kit is that you could buy it in stages, but in the end you're going to be paying around the same.

Well I noticed that the spool stage 1 kit gives around 160whp so what are the advantages of other kits?Thats basically what Im looking for but later it would be nice to be able to upgrade if it makes more power.ESPECIALLY if my buddy that has a 03 civic si gets his turbo too ;).Thanx guys

I've got Perfworks Kit on mine, love it. Still tuning, and I am already impressed. KzA will have his kit done next.

Well, hiboost shows the higher numbers. Flyin' Miata has been around a while and even subaru owners know of them. (Not to say that hiboost hasn't been around for a long time either, but more people here in the states are more familiar with FM). With the hiboost, fm, and wagner kits, all the upgrades are pretty much included, whereas the spool kit has room for improvement.

IMHO it all really depends on who you trust. Different tuners use different methods to make power. If you're just looking for raw power and not to worried about looks, go with either hiboost or fm. If looks are what you want go custom, it would cost the same when totaling it up. The good thing about spool is that you can buy the kits in stages so you could save as you go.

I'd say go w/ Spool... I was one of the first people to buy the kit and it was very impressive, and the kit looks great not only is it make your car faster but the kit looks tricked out and also look and search, last I heard people buyin FM kits were blowin motors and havin oil leaks and I really dont trust any of the new turbo kits comin out! well thats my .02 cents

The oil leaks were from the prototype kits with the rubber gasket at the oil return fitting on the turbo. The FP (no longer FM) kits use a fiberous gasket that seals.

Hey Bro, you might wanna check the following thread out:
http://www.protege5.com/vbb225/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22682

Also look up flying miata, perfworks, hiboost, essential, that's about it.

Lots of stuff on turbo kits, use the search button too!
actually another kit is the wagnermotorsports.net kit...i've been road racing with this kit (t3 super 60 watercooled) so far at only 2psi until i get some better engine management (mid august) and then go up to 6 psi

Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.
I have spoke to 4 people so far who purchased the FM kit and had it INSTALLED by FM. So far NONE of them have had any issues (some over 20k miles)

So I would tend to agree with Kieth who said that reliability has a lot to do with the install.

To be honest... I think all the kits are good in their own way (just depends on what your looking for). People just need to know that the install is a very important piece for their turbo kit to last a long time.

I would think most people would agree.

Regards,
Dale.

I, of course, vote for Flyin Miata / Flyin Protege. They have over a decade of turbo experience on the Miata. A 6 psi kit will give your car almost 170 wheel horsepower - check the dyno sheets at fmprotege.com.

They are working on a fuel management system that will allow 12 psi on stock internals. Should be ready very soon. Out of all the kits, FM has said they are confident they offer the most user friendly and reliable kit of the bunch. All of thier components, by the way, are of very high quality. Having visited the shop and watch them work, seeing how clean the operation is, I could not recommend anyone else.

The kit itself was designed by Corky Bell, who has been designing turbo getups for decades - not years, but DECADES. The FM kit does not require you to change anything else - not the clutch, no extra injectors needed, nothing. Plug and play.

(werd) WShade and I have both been by Corky's shop (Bell Engineering) in person, and have conversed with the man and his staff in person. As far as design and experience goes, Corky has the most. I can honestly say..."He wrote the book!" :D As far as quality of components, I can vouch for the FM kit (after testing was done and kinks hammered out) being top notch. The guys at FM know their stuff, and are serious about performance done right. As far as trust, they have mine. I know whatever they come up with in terms of fuel and timing control will be probably too competitive for words for the industry.

Have they got the FProtege kit working on an auto yet? I've seen more than one person say they like the kit, but it's not tested on an auto. I like the kit myself, but, it's not tested on an auto. And to be their guinyea pig will cost you the price of the kit, of course, plus a fairly $$$high$$$ installation cost. Spoolin's price is lower for installation on a tested kit then Flyin Proteges price on a test kit! They may have their reasons, but it is certainly a factor.

Never EVER let price play much of a factor when it comes to something like this. Seriously...

I am not sure if they test fitted an auto or not. I still want to get my car over their for them to do the install, I just have to save up a little more cash.

Unfortunately I live in St. Louis so I will have to ship my car out there for the install and that is an extra $800 on top of everything else (kit and labor).

So I am crunching numbers to see where I can limit my expenses and get it to them quicker. i.e. not worry about upgrading the exhaust and just sticking with the stock exhaust for now will save me $400 or so.

I also emailed Keith @ FM to ask if they got an auto yet but he is on vacation for another week or so.

We will see. If I am still the first, then I save a little on the install. If not, then I will wait a little longer and finish a few other projects around the house before I make the plunge.

There is a car running the FP kit with an automatic transmission. The charge pipes had to be modified I beleive, but the car has well over 25,000 miles on the odo now with the turbo and runs just fine
