What is this? [mystery under the hood]

Good day folks,

This weekend I was hit by an old chevy/dodge truck, probably an 80's truck. It was a mid-sized truck with chrome bumper and it smacked my MSP in the rear at a yield sign. Yeah, the lady driver wasn't paying attention to the car ahead of hers and just went on forward. Didn't do much damage to the MSP, scuffed the rear bumper a bit (nothing bent), but her truck bumper was bent in pretty badly (I have to admit I enjoyed seeing her vehicle damaged more than mine).

None the less it was a hit (within 5 mph) that shook my car. After taking care of the situation I went back home and decided to check underneath the hood. Popped open the hood and noticed dark liquid splashed on the left side of the wheel well area. It looks like oil, but then I checked closer and the smell did not smell like oil. I'm not certain though. Nothing was leaking from the engine that I could see in that area. There was a good amount of it though and it dripped down to the bottom plastic undercover of the car.

For the life of me, I can't figure out where the source of the liquid is coming from. I checked oil, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid (completely different area under the hood), and even coolant (would be pretty bad if it was where the BLACK liquid was coming from). Nothing seemed to be leaking or damaged/broke.

There is this one circle piece that seemed to have the most liquid stains inside and outside/around it. It is located near the windshield wiper fluid and power steering fluid bottles. This where I would like to ask you guys... what is that round piece? Inside is rubbery. Unfortunately, I do not see anything hooked up to it that provides any liquid that flows to/from it. I do not know if it is busted inside or what... not sure what it's purpose is supposed to be.

I took a couple photos of it and if you can take a look at it and tell me what that is and if it has some kind of oil in it that may have come out of it after the car impact?

Thanks,

Allen

hahahaha lol. i think (or hope) he knows what the mount is hes asking about the liquid.

hehe... that's a motor mount, son. contains no liquid.

edit: damn, bunch of ninjas up in this muh fuka.
at first i thought he was asking about the liquid itself, but i'm pretty sure he's wondering what the mount is. he asks "what is that round piece?"

The passenger side engine mount is liquid filled (at least on an MSP). When my mount ripped it sprayed liquid on the wheel well. One of the threads on engine mounts talks about this. I think it was 'TheMan' that explains that there's a difference between the 2.0l Protege's and the MSP mounts and that they are liquid filled.

I found the thread: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123679688&highlight=filled

None of my mounts are liquid filled. My pass mount looks exactly like his... a rubber bushing with voids in the front/rear of the bushing.

Also, based on those pics, I'm not sure the liquid is black. It looks like a clearish liquid that splashed on a dirty surface and suspended some of the dirt. (look at the base of the mount in the second pic)

prob just was some water sitting in a pool and the puddle jolted and splashed on your junk

dmention7 are you sure your mounts were Mazda mounts?
As I recall the liquid in mine wasn't black but a brownish color. Like the picture. It's been a while since mine were ripped (I've changed mine for AWR's), so I'm not positive. Also mine were definitely in worst condition, the engine-side half was no longer in the center of the housing side.

Not to get too off-topic, but that thread has a mix of people claiming to have liquid-filled mounts, and plain rubber bushings. It may be a canadian thing... because honestly, this is the first time I've ever heard mention of any liquid filled mount on any protege.

I have however, heard and seen many photos of othere folks' passenger side mounts--both msp and non-msp--and using AWR's inserts on their side mounts (which would not be possible on a filled mount).

Back on topic... I do agree it just looks like water though.

Inserts fit inside the molded holes in the mount...it could still be filled with liquid and have inserts. It appears to be for sure that some motor mounts are liquid filled, and that's the only explanation for the liquid around the mounts.

it is your motor mount and yes the passenger side mount is filled i was in a wreck in november and had the same thing black liquid on the side of motor just buy a new mount and be done. if you taste the liquid and it is a bitter sweet taste it is deff your mount but i am 100% certain that it is your mount..

LoL, thanks for the feedback folks. Thanks for the confirmation, I'll get that replaced.

Allen, you might just want to get a 70 durometer awr or medieval bushing, the factory msp passenger side mount is very expensive, I replaced mine before I started trolling these forums,

Thad.
