lol it kinda is ... basically, this kid started delivering tofu for his dad when he was 13, and had to do it very early in the morning. So, he tried to drive as fast as possible to get back home quick to go back to sleep. So at 18 (legal drive age in japan) he already had ~5 years of mountrain driving experience. He learned how to drift by going through the same road every single day.
so he owns everybody, beats an R32 with his little trueno, an EVOIII and IV, FD / FC ... even though some parts of the show dont really make sense (in a way) most of what they talk about like techniques and stuff like that is 100 times more accurate than any other movie about cars i've seen.
Kinda like computer movies ... i know people who loved Swordfish, but its total bulls***. Even most of the stuff in Hackers doesn't make sense, but people liked it too. I'm no mechanic, i just started learning about tuning, but Initial D looks 100 times better and alot more real than Fast and Furious and other movies like that. I really think it's worth watching
