What is the EGT Gauge do for me?

alright so im gonna order up some gauges and im planning on ordering a boost gauge and one other. judging by what people have told me and by what others have said on the board i was thinkin of going with the exhaust gas temperature gauge. but what would that really tell me? Would it basically warn me if the engine is running too hot before the water temp gauge starts to rise? also.....where would this sensor be located? Because i was wanting to get my msp dumped so the exhaust becomes pretty useless. any help would be great!

if you're gonna get two gauges, i'd say boost and oil pressure. a/f is fairly worthless, but is cool to look at for the colors (braindead.

maybe if i knew more about the egt gauge, but i never really thought that exhaust gas temperatures were as important as boost or oil pressure.

bump for a good answer.

youre best two first gauges are going to be

Boost
AFR (wideband)

then either EGT or Fuel Pressure (i would choose fuel pressure) then oil pressure. i dont see why oil pressure is so important warrier? unless you are doing some crazy autox-ing i dont see the point. i had a MAJOR oil leak on several occasions and still my oil press gauge was reading pretty normal.

yeah i know i really should get the aem wideband but id rather get a downpipe first. that gauge is too expensive right now. so how will fuel pressure help me?

the egt is good becuase it will let you know when your car is leaning out. as the temps rise the car is running leaner. thats what i have. boost, egt and fuel pressure. i got my fuel pressure because i was running fmu/fpr for a while. its good to know when you are not getting enough fuel.

for a turbo car, i would think that an oil pressure gauge would be vital for preventing any potential damage inflicted on the turbo due to lack of oil.

was your gauge a lower-quality gauge, or is that just how all oil pressure gauges are? i don't have that gauge (all i have is boost), so i don't know how other perform.

why would you say EGT? what would be watching that for (in terms of trouble for the engine or turbo)?

i see why you'd have an EGT then.

mathew - if you had a wideband, why would you then get an EGT? wouldn't the wideband be able to tell if you were rich or lean?

hey but where does the sensor for the egt go? cuz if it goes onto the exhaust and i disconnect mine it will become pretty useless.

I am going with boost, Wideband 02, and oil pressure. I believe that will cover the spectrum of what I want to monitor.

i have a boost gauge right now.... was debating the same thing about which gauge to get.

if you're not tuning, forget about wideband.
if you want something that lights up and is cool to look at, get narrowband a/f gauge.
the other guages i guess depends what you want to monitor.... oil pressure, fuel pressure, oil temp, water temp, egt ....

doesn't the egt let u know when u can safely shut off your car after racing around? also, doesn't it let u know when ur turbo is literally cooking?

The EGT will keep you from melting valves. It's good to know your A/F ratio, but that's not the only factor that influences you EGT. As your ECU pulls/advances timing your EGT will change, even with an A/F that looks good. Everything I've read said that you want a wideband O2 and a EGT gauge when tuning.

my egt is about an inch to the left of the exhaust housing.on the exhaust flange between the o2 sensor and turbo.
i have a egt as another way of tuning plus it lets me know how hot my turbo is and since i dont have a turbo timer i wait for the exhaust to cool down to a certain temp.

but i have alot of guages......... boost,a/f,volts,egt, and nx pressure........

how much is a motor?

just do what i do....drive w/ the thought that your motor will blow at any moment...yay good times!! (boom01)

not a smart thing... get the gauges first... especially the wideband... like said before, boost, wideband and oil pressure should be the first you get... you wont need to know your fuel pressure with the wideband, as if you run lean or no fuel pressure, itll show on the wideband...

think of it this way.. how good will your super cool down pipe be with a blown motor? get the right stuff first.. then go with the bling bling

just my opinion
