What have you done to your P5 today?

Well the wifey was drivin the car the other day everything was fine.. n when she went to leave stop sign car jist died.. turns out teeth shredded off timing belt n the bottom end jist spins n doesn't catch nothin.. time to replace

Two realizations about the P5 this week:
1. I need new tires. Like now. I broke traction twice last night on dry pavement in a straight line. Once in second gear!
2. After driving a friend's Volvo, I want to turbo the P5 to about 200-220 HP at the crank. Is that a reasonable goal? If I do get to do it, it will have to be on the cheap! I see that MSPs were 170 stock, what would it take to go to 200?

how many miles on the belt?

i'm asking because a fellow member has done his car like twice now and i've not done once in 151k miles...his car has never been garaged and mine has it's whole life except this past yr? just wondering if that really makes any difference at all?

I like the way you think, but like I said, this would have to be done on the cheap, so...

Also, I found the "daily driver MSP upgrade" thread, and I'm seeing that I could get away with MSP stuff, plus the supporting mods to get me to 10PSI. This could be doable. :D

...hope you have a spare FSDE

Foolish, how many miles on your FS-DE? That's one of the big reasons I'm going KL, I've got 130k miles and am basically swapping in a 20k mile motor good for many more years to come. IMHO, it's a bit silly to turbo a tired motor that might be on it's way out. Unless of course you rebuild it first but it sounds like you want to do it cheaply. Just something to think about.

Bazooka, I've got 130k miles on my P5, I bought it with 80k miles and my bearings are good too and as far as I know haven't been replaced. It's weird that some bearings go out at 60k miles and some at 150k miles...

kl is overrated, they make 150 at the crank...big woop
220 at the crank is pretty easy to do, t25 at 8 psi with all the basic bolt ons will probably give you that

no offense the ones swaping the KL in....but i just dont see the point of it, they dont make much more power then a FS, and for the price you pay to do the swap, you could have just modded the FS and had the same HP

200hp is an easy goal with these cars when they are boosted. Turboback exaust, intake, intercooler, upgraded manifold(exhaust manifold and the mod to the stock intake manifold), 8-10 pounds of boost and a solid tune will yield you close to if not a little over 200hp. You can add water/meth if you want to be more on the safe side on the stock block. I would also get a set of aftermarket motor mounts because the stock mounts will NOT last long once boosted. LSD is a smart option as well. You may need a new clutch as well. I could go on and on but everyone knows parts add up and once you get one thing, it's time to get something else already. Let's not even start on suspension work. That's where the real fun starts.

justanothermp5 beat me to it..lol

The KLDE makes 165chp, the KLG4 makes 170chp and the KLZE makes 200chp. I'm not trying to start a battle and either turbo the FS or swap a KL is still cool with me. But I prefer N/A for reliability.

You should just supercharge. It's cheaper than the KL and the MSP swap. It's good for the amount of HP you are looking for.

(sorry I had to get my cracks in)

That's true too. So there's 3 basically bolt-in options for a fun P5 motor. The KL is probably the most expensive, then the MSP turbo and lastly the supercharger. But I think we can all agree that they're all better than the stock FS-DE. :)

True, the reliability did go down when i turboed the car...but im used to working on my car pretty often, so i dont mind
The swap is def a cool swap, but if you turbo a KL, thennnnn its something i would like to do, they make some pretty decent power once boosted

somewhere down the line i would like to buy another protege 5 and do a boosted KL swap, but the trans is the main weak point in either
which sucks...

Yeah, I'm sure I'll eventually boost my KL in the next year or two which is yet another waste of money in a FWD wagon. But I love the way P5's look and I know my car really well too so I'll continue to sink money into it. Even after the rear quarter panels have rusted completely off, it will still be with me.

And every motor/trans/vehicle has a weak point. :(
