The biggest problems with running lean, is that it's very HOT. It'll cause your plugs to get too hot, cause hot spots in the combustion chamber, and then detonation could be a problem.
If you're running rich, you're running smooth and cool. Sometimes you can be under the impression that there's more power because of smoothly it runs. But TOO rich isn't good for power either.
