Ventilated seats cushion close up view

:
CX5 GT
It bugged me for a while why my ventilated seats felt different in comparison to my other CX5 which has only heated. I went and disassembled the seat. Hope this is interesting.

Here is the driver side ventilated seat cushion. The whole area circled in red (below the heated elements) is one big baloon (plastic bubble) that is part of the exhaust vents system . So in reality we are directly seating on the plastic bubble and not on a foam. The foam is way underneath in a cavity carved to "host the bubble".

If the new CX5 2026 comes with the new seats from the cx30/50/90 that would be great upgrade.

What i found is the plastic bubble is deformed after only few years and about 20k miles. Plus the cushion below flattened. Not great experience to sit in it. Its shame this happened so early.

old vs new drivers side cushion

I noticed the left and right bolsters are different and one "sits" bit higher than the other.
This may contribute to the issue that some people have. If you cant fit right in the middle your bottom parts would always sit at an angle on top of the left and right bolsters. Not good ergonomy.

Apart from the cushion, the seat assembly is very sturdy and of very good build.

For those wondering- the driver side seat cushion is the same for all years. So no changes in 2019 vs 2023, etc.

Does it leverage two separate fan blowers for bottom and back?

The ventilated seats on my GX 460 is simply via channels in the foam

Example in GX

Very interesting, thanks! Could you see how/where the airbag seat occupancy sensor works (passenger side)?

Sorry. I have disassembled only the drivers seat.
As far as I know there is kind of a small pad additional on the passenger side. Comes with the cushion and probably why the passenger side cushion is more expensive than the driver

Ohh, sorry, my confusion. I thought your pics were from the two sides, but I now see it's the same side.

Good point. updated the original text to note its the drivers side. The two cushions side by side are old and a brand new one. I changed the drivers cushion

Full removal of the passenger side (as far as i know) may require mazda tools for calibration of the occupancy sensor afterwards.

One other note for comfort for those that experiende issuses -
the bolsters can be easily cut horizontally and softer padding can be glued there. I think this has come up before for softening the bolsters.
Another option is to put 1/2" auto-grade foam below the cushion and above the springs which would effectively lift the seating pad area a bit.

Interesting! Maybe body type makes a difference. I'm under 130lbs and wish my vented front seats (2022, <60k kms or 37k miles) to be a bit softer.

they cant be softer because you sit on large mesh of plastic bubbles (part of the vent system) not direclty on the foam. The foam itself is siper soft but not the plastic bubbles. This is why I disassembled it to look what I sit on. the non ventilated seats are softer. The ventilated not.
