valve cover gasket issues

I just got done rebuilding my engine + head. New cam seals and put blue rtv silicon under cam caps 1 and 6 the ones that are over cam seals. New valve cover gasket and its leaking from the top all down the side. Is this a common problem?(rolleyes)

I personally haven't had that problem. I'd clean everything off and reseal it. Use a little more rtv next time. If you've rebuilt your engine, I trust you to know what to do as far as applying more! Good luck mate. I rebuilt my engine a few months ago. Haven't had any major problems other than my goof up with my oil pan and a set of undertorqued head bolts...

Mind me asking why you needed to rebuild the motor??

Well I shouldn't say motor as I left everything from the head down alone except for crank seal and oil pan seal and water pump. T. Belt. The old turbo was shot it was a week before I got the new to me used turbo in. So I took the head in for an acid dip port and polish and new valves, valve guide seals were bad too. New head gasket and arp head studs. Itis running rough. I think I need to get valves ajusted or shimmed not sure. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they are hydrolic valves?

No kidding. So I did a little more than you. But I wouldn't know where to begin as far as the turbo. I did my piston rings and junk. They're shim on bucket lifters, I thought the valves just had springs?? Ask pcb or BRIANMP5T. (pretty much anyone but me) They should know. I wish I knew more about specs on the engine...

How was the water pump? Ill look at doing mine in a little while since im at 84k now.

Theoretically, if you put the lifters back in the same spots they came in, you shouldn't have to worry about adjusting anything. If anything, you might need to check the gap between the shims, but im not quite sure how in the heck to do that...

All you needed to do was take out the Cam Buckets, put them in a divided container (numbered) and put them back in the same spot.

So when I do this, I have a parts box (cheap divide box from wallmart) and I label it 1-16

Starting from the Ex side left to right is 1-8 and the In side left to right 9-16

This way, because tehy were shimmed to the cam on the way out, they wont require anything but a quick check.

...my valve cover leaks all the time... but that could be because i damaged it a bit when i put it on, and i've only recently put some sealant around where the seal goes over the cams. It doesn't leak into the timing belt area any more, but i think i've still got some problems around the exhaust manifold side of the cover.
When you put the cover back on, maybe the gasket slipped out and got smashed a little. Maybe after driving around a little it expanded/settled differently and that's what's giving you problems? After you initially put the new gasket on, you're supposed to make sure the cover is still on there tight after you've driven around for a little. I'm sure you knew that and probably already checked it, but i didn't! :D I should go do that...

Yeah the water pump was simple, a word of advice, take the water pump pulley off before you remove the lower timing belt cover (I didnt see how much simpler it makes the whole process, untill i put it back on) and yes we numbered the buckets
1-8 Intake and 1-8 Exhaust and put them back in order. What im worried about is they regrinded the exhaust valves and put new intake valves in. Wont that make the clearences vary, since the shims were sized for previous valve measurments? Also does anyone have information on what the clearences should be for the valves, i called our local con paulos mazda shop and they seem to be uneducated in this application.

Yes got the valve cover to stop leaking. What had happened was when i put silicon under cam caps 1 and 6 it had raised them up a little and the four corners on the double arch over the caps wasn't sealing right on the head so i put more silicon under those four coprners and no more leak.
