Upgrade Spark plugs/wires?

I'm getting ready to tune up the MP3 (59k) and I'm looking for experienced answers please. I've got some BKR5E-11 plugs that I got from the pay it foward thread on here. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and use these, or maybe change to a different plug. Also curious about plug wire opinions.

My mods include injen style CAI, wagner header and magnaflow custom exhaust. I'd say I'm a moderately spirited driver, who likes to race it sometimes.

yes these NGK ZFR5F-11 plugs are really good, just did mine and smoothed out everything. but you have to ask for them by the number not by our car because they wont come up.

Thanks, that link is perfect. Do you mean just regular NGK wires or what? Also, what does ftw stand for? I can't figure it out.

ftw= for the win!!!! and i don't think wires don't really do much that you can tell, the ngk ones are just for looks.

They could not find them by part number at the Advance auto I went to. I asked for plugs for a 1998 Honda CR-V EX 2.0 DOHC and they had lots of them (It is the same part)

so the NGK ZFR5F-11 are good for any 3rd gen protege? how are they different than the iridium ngks im running now that are meant for the
P5/protege?

yes. u should notice smoother throttle response and no lurking. u can get longer reach iriduims if u want. iriduims are mainly for the longer life span, but you will get better results with the copper plugs

I have both and they aren't quite the same.. and not just the NGKs being blue. Yeah, the NGK wires are really nice though, and cheaper than stock I think.

so basically the plugs sit farther down in the combustion chamber? Whould these plugs still work if I wanted to bump up the compression down the road? or would there be a danger of the piston hitting the longer reach plugs.

If you have enough money to buy new pistons for higher compression, I think you can spare $10 for new plugs. (uhm)

(I personally would not trust the longer plugs on different pistons)

haha... money for new plugs wouldnt be a huge issue just wondering if they would work or not.

When i installed the iridiums i thought a noticed a little better response out of the p5. do you guys think the longer reach plugs would improve respose even more??

I also replaced my plugs with the longer ones, and it improved idle and engine rpms between shifts a good amount. But improvements also depend on how long ago you had the plugs replaced, if ever. (switching from older plugs to any kind of new plugs = better improvement). I never had iridiums or platinum, but read that the longer copper ones are better in terms of performance, and iridiums last longer.

I got them at a mazda/subaru dealer near me. Went in and asked for part number 0000-18-F287. They had them in stock, and I think I payed like $8.50 for 4 of them.

Just don't mention what car your getting these for because they will probably stick you with the regular ones for the protege, at least thats what they wanted to do for me. They thought I was an idiot and even called another person to explain to me that these were not going to work (confused) . Got them anyway, installed in 5 min, and was very surprised by how much of a difference it made. Have had them for over 9,000 miles with no problems.
