are AWR still the only ones available? im interested in buying them asap even if for 500 bucks...someone help me out here

depends if you want a 4-2-1 or a shorty header. I have a shortie header the was built by a member of this board. Traveler is his name. its a equal length, menderal bend shortie header. coated inside and out. i didnt gain a whole bunch of power, Traveler has a dyno on his website and he gained 8lbs of torque peak and ike 7 horse, but from 3000 and up he gained power through out the power band. but i had two of my freinds drive my car. and all three of us can tell a nice difference in power. cost me $460 shipped. it may be a little difference price for you cause of the shipping cost.

that is one wacky looking header..I'm definetly going the route of 4-2-1..does anyone have one that DOESNT trip CEL's and blow up your car?

And THAT's an understatement! I've never seen anything like that header before. Jesus what were they smoking when they welded that? If you think you increased your power that's what really counts, and I'm ot flaming you or anything. But man that's the ugliest thing I ever saw.

it may be freaky looking, but it is effective. (and that's what counts!) the reason it looks like that is that the exhaust down pipe is off center. so in order to get all the pipes to the same spot AND be equal length, it needs to twist around.

yea, I had a shorty header on my sunbird..same kind of deal..just wasn't as convoluted as that one is..500$...hmm..i'll have to stew on this one

The crazy looking shorty is good if you want to retain your primary cat. But if you don't care/need to, then go with a 4-2-1 such as AWR's, or see if RacingMazda's is ready for the Protege yet, or get RacingMazda's MX-6 one that bolts on but needs work to get the EGR tube lined up.

it DID gain power. Shortie headers do gain power. not as much as long ones. but they do.

not pointed at anybody on this responce.

I beleive this header is a work of art. anybody can throw toghether four tubes, this one took some work.and all 4-2-1 headers will throw a cell, you are removing the first cat. you can fix it by getting the O2 simulaters. i didnt want to worry about all that.

all the headers are such a pain..i mean 500$? thats more than the AWR for less gains...i just don't see myself paying that kind of money for something thats has about half the gain than a cheaper header..althought keeping the cats is nice..I just want a straight answer from someone...with the AWR header..it removes the first cat, ok..which is the unnecessary pre-cat..but..with the AWR and a high-flow primary cat..will i still pass emmissions?????

Yeah, Hey I didn't mean to sound like I was dumping on you or anything and I apologize if I sounded offensive. If it works that's all I would care about too, but you have to admit it looks a little nutty.

all the first cat does is burn out the excess crap from when you start your car...let it run for 20-30 minutes you should be golden..the only thing i dont think you'd pass is the visual test..

sorry man its been a long day. but i think thats why i like it so much since it looks funny. everybody in my car club calls it the octopuss header.

with a long header and a after market you will probably (also read as maybe) pass all the sniffer tests in the US. but visiuals probably not.

actually we really dont know that. NOBODY has ever posted a dyno for just a long tube header.

Equinox posted his gains of about 11whp in 3rd gear, ~10.5whp in 4th gear in the For Sale section with the AWR header he purchased from somebody there.

Yea, saw that dyno result post from the AWR header..with the first cat gone you WILL pass the sniffer test..You just need to let it run for 20mins or so so it runs up to normal temp. Im not sure if they even test for visual in my state (CT) but I know when I ran my sunbird with a high-flow cat and a shorty header, it passed. Im new the protege scene..usually I was all about american cars, which are easy to cheat on emissions..
