Underdrive pulley

Just to throw this in the air...5-8 HP might be a big deal when you are a professional racer, and you need every ounce of HP you can squeeze from your motor. But as a daily driver car, you wouldn't even notice it. I've heard a lot of people say you normally don't notice a "difference" in power from anything less than a 10HP gain. I'm sure different parts(exhaust, header) might give you more top end/low end power, but where are you supposed to feel a difference with a 5+HP pulley??

Before you get a UR pulley, talk to someone with a 3rd Gen Eclipse V6 who had a problem with one..... Many engine issues, very LITTLE help from UR..... Buyer beware and all that...

As far as the alternator goes, you may see something different, but the brown out when the FANS come on is pretty extreme as it is. I can't conceive of making it WORSE by reducing the effective capacity of the alternator. Just my .02....

Yea but, 5hp here, 8hp there, another 10hp somewhere else, and soon you've added 30-40 total.

Please keep us posted on what happens in the future with the pulleys. I am very interested as I plan on keeping the 5 NA.

HP doesn't necessarily add up like math in the 3rd grade. Don't asume a 5HP gain from one part plus an 8HP gain from another part are going to give you 13HP total.

I plan to drive my car for a long time...If I wanted an ultra fast car, I would have bought one. We are dealing with a compact car here, not a race car (MSP excluded). I can see upgrading Intake/Exhaust because that allows the engine to breathe a little better...and there have never been complaints (cept maybe for the CAIs) about harming engines. But trying to squeeze every once of power out of an engine by risking the long-term reliability is too much of a risk for me personally. Underdrive Pulleys have been around for a while, and its a hit or miss kinda thing.

amen to that. even the MSP i think should be included. yes there's potential for it since its got a turbo but it is afterall just another 4 banger with that turbo.

I plan on driving my car a long time too but I bought an MSP for a reason. It was a great all around package (speed, handling) but I knew it would need a little more oomf. Underdrive pulley is a good mod with a bad rap. I have heard more praise about them than bad, other than here. I expect to have my pulley here and installed by EOM and will let you ppl know how it goes. I want to find a dyno too when I put it on, but I think I will wait until I put on an intake too.

underdrive pulleys are not a good solution for daily drivers...it has been disputed more than once in forums so I'm trying staying neutral on this one.

Just keep in mind, when you live in a warm weather climate, having your water pump run 15% slower will cause your engine to run hotter than it was designed.

Your alternator will not charge your battery as well as it should causing the battery to fail sooner than usual. People w/ large stereos should think about replacing their alternator with a high output one if they want to do this.

None of the affects are immediate. Down the road you may see that parts start to fail before they should. If you are alright with this, go for it.

Out of curiosity, what does Mazda say about them? Will they void our warantees?

I have been running an UR Pulley on my car for 60k miles, no overheating, or any problems, my brother has had one for almost 80k miles, no problems.

did your car have a harmonic balancer?
did you replace it when installing the UP?
There seems to be a problem with the UP on the miatas being your taking the dampener off and just adding a different diameter pulley.
Id like to see a pic if someones protege with the pulley if anyone would be so kind as to post one either installed or on the shelf.
thank in advance:D

<snip> I know plenty of people who drive WRX's that have underdrive pulleys and have no problem at all. I know their pulleys are balanced, they make them specific for each type of car. </snip>

The WRX motor is quite a bit diffrent that our motor. :D What's good for one car isn't neccessarily good for another. Same goes with the UD pulley on a Eclipse/Talon motors. I'm sure the Miata motors are alot more like ours than those mentioned above, and they seem to be having problems with it. Take it as you want to...:D

My stock crank pulley had a harmonic balancer, I replaced it with the UR which does not. The UR pulley is also smaller (and of course lighter), but never any problems. Actually, the stock pulley in our cars have been known to come apart so your safer with the UR if you drive a DSM = )

whats the deal? is there going to be a group buy on these or what?

also does anyone know if unorthdox is going to make an ss kit with all three pullys, crank, power steering and alternator?

I used to have a 93 Toyota Celica All-Trac, w/ UR pulleys(gave me a 12hp increase). When I traded my All-trac for my MSP it had 189,637mi., and still running strong. And believe me....I ran the SH!T outta that engine(3SFE-GT 2.0 w/HKS GT3040 turbo upgrade), and @ 10psi. I had the pulleys on for about 65K of those miles w/out any problems. And the kit did`nt come w/ harmonic balancers.

But hey, that was a Toyota not a Mazda. So who knows what can happen w/ the UR pulleys for the MSP.(cheers)

Oh..and the only reason I got rid of the Celica was due to the fact of the milage, and plus I wanted something new(2thumbs)(mspb)
