"Tying" both cooling fans together?

I have a 2000 Protege with the 1.6 liter . I removed all my AC components and want to tie the AC cooling fan together with the regular engine cooling fan . Has anyone did this ? Can I just wire the two together by connecting them or should I do something different ? Any help is appreciated .

You would need to run a relay, power from the fuse box or battery, switched wire from the primary fan +, and a ground wire.

What is the purpose for the relay and for a ground wire ?
If I spliced wires and hooked both fans togather wouldn't they both come on and off like normal when the primary engine fan comes on ?

The only thing that comes to mind is that the relay that turns on the one fan now may not handle 2 fans reliably for too long because by connecting both fans together the power load will be higher on one relay.
