turbo sound

At work today I took off my injen cai because it was rubbing. I put everything back together. I drove it hard on the way home to see what is was like without it since I had a cai for so long. I noticed that in 1-3 gear around 4500 rpm the turbo has a high pitch sound. I noticed this with my cai but I figured it would go away without it since its not getting as much air. I cant remember if it sounded like that before I put my cai on. So if anyone is running stock do you hear this? Or any help would be great.

I believe thats the turbo spooling. ;)

It's probably the ball bearings spinning, it sounds more like a distinct whistle than the actual compressor spinning. Sweet sound. Thats what the R on the GT25R means, heh.

correct me if i'm wrong but don't we have a regular t25? the t25R has a 4" inlet....
the regular t25 isn't a ball-bearing turbo... I read it somewhere else on these forums. Someone was bitching abotu something somewhere and someone put him in his place correcting him that the turbo wasnt the crappy t25, but the R version.

yes, its a journal bearing t25, not a GT turbo... your turbo is MUCH cheaper than the roughly $1000 for a GT25R

this is not entirely true. our turbo's are ballbearing. i believe you're confusing our turbos w/ the mazdaspeed miatas.

Callaway adapted a Garrett T25 ball-bearing turbo with an integral waste gate for the project, developing a unique turbine housing for this application.

"Pumping up the Mazdaspeed Protege's heart rate is a Garrett T25 turbocharger system. The turbocharger incorporates the latest in aerodynamic and ball-bearing technology."

Mazda went to the turbo gods at Callaway Cars. The resulting 170-hp engine employs, among other things, a Garrett T-25 turbocharger equipped with a lag-reducing ball-bearing center housing

looks like we're both partially right.

well, yes it has a single side BB (iirc) but that does not make it a GT series turbo. the GT's are a complete redesign, using fewer than half the parts of a t series turbo.

only thing i dont get is i got a deck of Garrett playing cards from a Garrett booth @ the IAS. its got bunch of coo pics and info of garrett turbos, and on one card it has a picture of the mazdaspeed protege and right underneath it it says, Garrett GT25R 2.0L, 170hp.

from my understanding our turbo's are a modified t25 w/ ball bearing center housing.
