Turbo Questions

I was reading a different thead and they were talking about the SPOOL Stage 1 kit running at 4-5 psi. My first questions is what kind of boost can be run when you start adding the intercooler BOV, etc. I was also wondering why the boost was so low. I know the engine and tranny are super strong but my cousin is running 16psi on an old stock talon without an intercooler and my dad has a Banks Turbo on his F350 that he runs at around 23psi and can run upto i think 32.

Is there a different in the turbo and what it is producing? Why the big differnce in boost? what kind of hp is being produced at 5psi?

I an thinking about possibly getting a SPOOLING Stage on kit, I just need to have a better idea of what I am getting first. Any info would be great.

Anything over 10 PSI will destroy our stock engine. 8 PSI is the reliable limit. Many people have blown engines even under 8 PSI. TO run more you would need to start replacing internals. Also our Trannies just can't handle that much power. A well tuned 8 PSI can yield 200 wheel horse power.

The Talon's engine is designed to run a turbo from the factory so its stock internals can withstand increased boost. I assume the F350 is a Turbo Diesel...and I believe the same idea applies...built for boost.

Also...turbo size, type and engine design will result in varied boost Vs Hp levels.

I'm sure one of our resident turbo experts can explain in further detail...

The stock FS motor can handle 12 psi max, and ten on a regular basis. Anything over six and you are going to need something to control fuel and timing to ensure that the motor is getting what it needs.

You can reliably run eight pounds of boost if you run high enough octane gas.

As for the tranny, it can deal with up to about 240 whp, at which point it'll probably not be stable enough for heavy day-to-day driving.

Spoolin' has run higher than 12 psi, but he also has a very trick set up...His car is still doing well.

Thanks, but the talon, i guess i should have mentioned that he had to replace both the tranny and engine because he was running at a high boost. And yea, the F350 is a Turbo Diesel.

Would you say that for a daily driver (My wife will drive it to work), a turbo isn't the best option. I guess I realy want something that can run against a WRX or pull away from the big turbo diesel fords on the passes around Montana and Idaho.

Its going to take atleast 6PSI wiht a full 3" exhuast, no cats, to hold with a stock suburu at speed but even then you have no chance of ever beating one from a stop since they have all wheel drive and we don't even have a limit slip.

3" exhaust, does that include a highflow cat or is that just from the cat back. Would it be cheaper, since it wont be any type of show car to have a custom exhaust built at an exhaust shop or to buy one. I know stainless steal is nice but is it worth the price. I had a 2.5" dual exhaust built for my truck from the heads back for less than $300. That wasn't stainless and included turbo mufflers.
