Turbo Problems...Screeching, Hesitation, Bogging...

it is if its a whistling sound. ive been through this on here quite a few times.

So if i am strapped for cash, what are my options, especially when i have the dealer committed to fix the problem...They've already had three techs confirm the problem, one from another dealership, and now they have a mazda rep coming out to check it out...

Without spending the money to replace it with an aftermarket, what should i do?

theres nothing u can really do without replacing the midpipe at least. Its not going to make the turbo fail right away or anything, u can surely drive it like that, its just making the turbo work harder than it has to. save your pennies i guess :)

Regarding SleepMSP's post, I can feel less power when the screeching is bad, but i can't tell if its directly related to the screech or if there are more variables at work.

I think what your feeling is the hesitation our cars get at higher RPM's and WOT due to the insanely rich A/F ratio's and poor timing more than the turbo bogging down

indeed. at 4k or so it drops the afr 9.2-9.6 ish its really bad, especially with the restrictive exhaust and intercooler.

i had a EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE sound on mine.. it would come around 4 k rpm when boosting..

you know theres that high pitched sound the turbo mkes and that
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

well as soon as i got the catless mid pipe on, the sound is gone.. it never came back

so you sound might be the exaust.. like knox joe said

im voting on that too

i dont think theres many, just the protege garage one, or apex or u can go custom. go to an exhaust shop and have em fab u one up. if ur jsut wanting to get rid of the screetching, go 2.5" w/ a high flow cat, should be under 200 for aluminized steel.

If I were to do it all over again I'd probably go to a muffler shop for my whole exhaust.

The sound is normal..a turbo IS NOT gonna be quiet. It will whir and I guess "Squeal" as it builds boost....Your screech may be what the rest of us call a whir or squeal.
I think you are wanting it to be silent..and its not gonna happen..its a turbo..there are sound associated with them.

When you rev a engine high the turbo revs high as well and moving alot of air I say the noise just might be the air that creating a whistle somewhere. A aftermarket exhaust should help that. I would say if you are worried about it being caused by friction get a aftermarket intercooler it will keep everything cooler and help and lubrication stay cooler and work better.

I've had a problem before where I would get that really high pitched whistle around 4k rpm (and even a slight dip in speed). I think mine is an intake leak because everytime I work on my car and have to tighten the charge pipes after workin I notice the whistle goes away. It eventually comes back, luckily it hasn't yet.

Thanks for the suggestions for a fix as well as some of your guys input on the noise and whether its an issue or not... I would agree that the air may be whistling so loud it creates the screeching noise at high boost, but I've now had two dealerships and three techs tell me that the noise were hearing is NOT normal and from what i know these guys are the dealer techs that only work on the mazdaspeed turbo engines...I am looking into a custom midpipe from a local shop and waiting to hear back from the Mazda Corporate field tech to call me and tell me whats going on... At this point, I think if this guy can't fix the car, i'm just gonna get a custom midpipe...It's like knox joe said, if the warranty can't fix it, start modding...

+1

i'm still under warranty and i bought a stainless steel catless mid pipe.. best thing i've done to the car so far.. and the screech/squeal/ EEE sound is dead gone..

like it's not the dealera fault if mazda failed at designing something the right way in the first place.. even if they changed the cats, turbo, downpipe ect ect.. you're still gonna have the sound.. get a catless mid pipe and be done with the sound.. oh and you get an extra 10 WHP with that ;)

Thats amazing...I'm having a shop custom fab the pipe after all...The only things he's wondering is what the diameter of the flange is that mounts up to the engine side "S" of the downpipe... He's ordering parts and we didn't take it off and measure it while i was there yesterday...anyone have any specs on the midpipe before I take it in to him tomorrow?

if it costs more than 200$ to make, it was a bad choice..

PG has one in stainless steel and is a DIRECT bolt on.. no hassles..

thats what i bought. and i am VERY satified..

Thanks for the heads up...He's already quoted me at under $100 for just the pipe I think... We measured the flange today and he already has all the other parts... I think I'm gonna drive it catless for a little while and make sure the sounds gone and then we'll put a cat in the line... I think it'll work out nicely...

believe me, you'll never go back to a catted pipe... even highflow, after you experience no cats on a msp :)

the one i bought is catless you know. the picture on PG shows a highflow cat but it's an option.(thought)

within the 1st minute of driving it, you'll see what i mean;)
