Turbo MP3 Reliability

OK.
Please bear with me. I have owned 2 cars: a 94 Mx6 and a 94 Rx7. One was NA and slow. The other was TT and fast. Now I have a good chance to buy a 2001 MP3. After the FD, this thing is going to seem like a snail. I see that there are some good turbo kits out on the market for the protege and the MP3 in particular. I read up on a few of them - trying to see if that would be the right route for me to take. Now, I don't need to run a 9 sec. 1/4 mile time, but I like some power in my car.
The problem is, I am getting rid of the FD to go to a more reliable car. If I turbocharge the MP3, does this destroy all of its reliability? What would have to be done to maintain the reliability and still increase the power? I was shooting for a total of 230-250 hp...more than the Jspec conversion would give me. Any suggestions and comments are welcomed. Thanks,
Tyler

At 230-250, you're going to have a lot of money sunk into the car. It's also still going to be FWD. Have you driven the MP3 yet?

Keith

Very true, I am $5K into it and only pushing around 180 whp.

Yeah...maybe I'll just get a midpipe and intake...and call it quits - I can't afford to replace engines again.

Done conservatively and safly you won't have to. Which is why I bough the wideband O2 to watch everything that goes on.

Its a reality to me that a FWD, especialy in the MP3 form
(no LSD, weak axles, weak tranny, weak clutch, weak internals, pain in the ass ECU) will be a b**** to control and maintian at that power level.

moreover...Keith would NEVER "dis" (lol) anyone...he is by far one of the most helpful and informative person on this form.... "dis" i haven't heard that in awhile!

Its all a matter of time before we all know what works perfectly (close to it) with our cars, and all the bells and whistles we need to do it.

Well for engine control....yes.
Work well for tranny reliability...no. Nothing has begun on that front. Also Linux yu know all to well what has to be replaced to run power on this car. YOu have done: clutch flywheel, forged internals, now your stepping to the ECU but what happens when you get to 220 whp and can't control it at all anymore. Then its time for an LSD.

The tranny is fine for over 200 hp...It's been proven.

The motor needs work to run big hp, everyone knows that.

Torque steer is what Keith was referring to I think. The MP3, particularly turboed, has plenty of it.

If you're coming from an FD, you're used to very good RWD handling. The MP3 handles very for a FWD, but it's still a FWD. That's all. It'll never be an FD with a back seat.

We just found out yesterday that our diff maker has started making Protege diffs. Hopefully there's one on the way to us now from Australia. Let's see what we can do about that torque steer...
