tuners worst nightmare

s***!

I'm getting a bank 1 code and a 50%throttle plate stuck open code, I'm on my second motor and turbo since the hydrolock, thing is the code comes on and off every several days, and my dealer doesn't have a clue why... I got the latest flash, I tell them its a bad imtps they say it can't be, car is going in the shop today...

Sorry to barge in on your thread, but I know what u mean.

What are the code numbers?

Also, what causes the turbo seals to leak? They got too hot and too much pressure?

actually it went like this
me: yes i think my turbo seals are gone have you heard of this issue before
dealership:no

after inspection
me: so what are you guys gonna do?
delearship: we saw nothing wrong with the car except a cel

me:what was the cel?
delearship:running lean in back one, We performed other test and found out that your car isn't running lean. We noticed you exhaust, and we are thinking that because you removed the convertor that its causing the ecu to trip a cel. I know most of the time performance parts coming in stages, did you get it tuned so that you can erased the cel

me: NO
delearship: yep i think that will solve your problem

me:what about the smoke:
delearship: of that, that is condensation

me: really
dealership: ok sign here.

man that garage is not filled with condensation

Well this sounds extremely familiar...
18 psi Extreme dyno.webp
Tuner said exactly the same thing and suggested I get water/meth. I've got the cp-e pump and I'm tuning again this Friday. Hoping for good things.

So as you guys know i'm pretty much on the fore front of modding for the ms3. So i decided to finally be true to myself, get the car tuned and call it a day.(or completely be done modding the car for performance) Any ways so first pull i get 274 whp and 298 ft lbs. I'm thinking to myself"wow thats kinda low, i know people are posting higher numbers with fewer mods". So the tuner starts working his tuner magic, and my wonderful experiance turn'd bad fast. To make a long story short,..., my a/f were low on the bottom and good up top, no surprise right. Well to tuner guy can't tune the car at all. Im already maxing out the pump down low. He basically told me not to drive to car hard till i get a fuel pump. So i called cp-e and su to help and both of those guys were great Mark, and Jordan. They helped out alot but i still have my hands tied behind my back. I was on the dyno for 4 hrs they were trying all kind of things. I think the tuner guy felt bad so he only charged me 100.00 and told me to come back!!!!!!
I knew the fuel pump issue was going to criple me but i didn't think it would completely halt the whole process. I guess this is what happens when your in front. I really thought i would be able to work my way around the damn fuel pump for some extra ponies!!!
And to boot, my f$^king seals started to blow oil it filled the whole damn shop. Heres some pics

one of the predominate theories is that the seals are floating designs that require exhaust backpressure to properly maintain sealing. removing exhaust backpressure (catalytic converters, mufflers, larger piping) seems to have a profound effect on the turbo seals ability to do its job.

Hey(boom07), I just ordered a DP from you!!!! So now I'm going to get failing turbo seals...? (nervous)(confused)

no goober!! you'll have to replace a lot more than that. and than i bet you'll have a small chance to the seals going

just replacing one piece of the exhaust system will likely not cause this. on tru-boost's car we did a full turboback and his car put out alot of smoke. now he has just a test pipe and all is well. laloosh is running that same turboback and gets no smoke whatsoever. it can be a hit or miss problem but for the people that do have it, seems to be when a majority or all of the exhaust components are replaced.

OK... Help me clear up some things.

Turbo back is from the turbo exhaust side up to thru the 2nd cat/ cat back exhaust; specifically CP-E DP (catted).

If this is the case then half my exhaust is modded (well, to be modded). I am planning on the Mazdaspeed exhaust in the near future...just to keep a true 3" all the way through...

Basically, you're telling me I'll be having turbo seal issues...(boom06)

I'll be starting a post to see what years have been affected with this smoking issues deal...

I'm worried now...

Turbo back is the entirty of the exhaust.

Downpipe back maintains the downpipe

Cat back is just that. From the final cat and out.

No use in sweatin the mods...mine is bone stock except for the MS CAI and it's in the shop right now getting the turbo and all the cats replaced...it's really hit or miss... nothing to do with mods in my case. :-/

People were getting lots of smoke from just a downpipe, I installed cpe's catted dp and have no smoke so yeah it def is on some cars I doubt when i install my catback it will start smoking if it hasnt already (hopefully)

I have just a test pipe and mine started smoking a little while back. I'm pretty sure there are some stock exhaust guys with the same issue as well.

Mazda obviously knows this is an issue as they have changed the turbo part numbers on the new replacement turbo, most likely indicating a design change.

The removal of the cat would obviously make this look worse as much of the smoke would be stopped by either of them... but at the same time fouling them and your O2 sensors. If they fail, you're looking at quite a bit of cash to replace 2 cat's and 2 O2 sensors.

I know a few people with full catbacks have had their turbo's replaced under warranty.

I wonder if this has been happening after a certain mileage...?

If the turbo goes bad, why not just upgrade it?
