Trying to hit 250whp, help?

ssafc is still risky for mid 200's u cant control timing so the egts will be extremly bad. and i havnt really hear hardly anything good or bad about the ftc's. mark (lowpsi) is local to me and he said that when they installed it on a friend of his's car he wasnt very impressed with it.
 
I don't really want to change out the pistons and rods. Any advice?
i can sum this all up:
if money is no object, get a standalone and a PNP harness. itll run you $1100-1500, but you may end up going through a motor or changing your mind about a forge. you are extremely unlikely to find one used.
if you want 220whp, SSAFC is fine, and will be the cheapest. you can easily find them used for $275.
if you want 250whp, SSFTC, AEM F/IC, or unichip all work. unichip is $300-350, SSFTC is $400-450, you can find both fairly often used - though not as much as an AFC. the AEM unit brand new is like 435 i think?

if you buy used and change your mind, you can probably sell it for around what you paid. if you buy anything brand new, youll take a huge hit when you sell it.
if you buy unichip, you have to either get it dyno tuned from an authorized tuner or mail it out everytime you want the map changed.

so i, and a lot of people who see this as what it is, and not a "STANDALONE >>>> EVERYTHING" thing, would say to get a USED split second unit or the AEM. the price on a new unichip is a ******* joke - dont bother.

any tuner is only as good as the tune...
 
um, lowpsi runs the ssafc in his car personally and previously worked for a well known local tuning facilty. he now works for a shop that preps cars for the track. he didnt like the ftc, im sure there is a good reason.
 
sooner or later when you do build your engine. if you want to get the most out of the money you put into the car standalone is better than going cheap skate. im from a state with no inspection so maybe thats why i think the way i do.....or it could be that my father has a performance shop and ive seen people go the cheap route and not be happy. when they bought the standalone they were happy as s*** due to only have to tune the ecu and not multiple controllers that will cost you more to tune at a tuning shop. you can arguee with me all day long but in the long run you will loose. sam has backed me up on this before! im only trying to give him good useful information. why? becuase if been through it already.
 
i wish he could jump in this now. to me there is no other good tuning device for these cars then a haltech. i work on cars for a living, its what i do. i learn anything and everthing about a car that i can, if i dont know i ask. who do i go to for a question about this car? sam. u want good reliable power outa this car. build it right the first time.

i dont have ten grand to sink into building a car, and if you really want to get a lot out of the MSP, thats what you need. period.

he says he doesnt want to build the engine. if he was even considering it, i would probably recommend haultech too. but he said right in the OP he doesnt want to go that route, so why do all you forged guys keep telling him to buy something he doesnt need for his build, then push him to build the engine?
 
you can, but its hard.

for 250whp, you need a 2.5" exhaust all the way back, FMIC, unichip, exhaust mani, 440cc injectors (i think), intake mani would help, EBC, boost gauge, wideband, and a wicked tune. a larger turbo would help considerably, as the GT25 is out of its efficiency range at redline above OEM boost. thats not to say its a bad turbo, its adequate, but youll make more whp on a bigger turbo at the same boost - plain and simple.

all of the above would probably make 250whp @10psi on a GT28rs, assuming you have a good tune, and the knowledge that youre pushing engine limits at 250whp.

I have to second this. I was considering the exact same setup for the future but i would consider also an SRI or CAI and possibly. I go back and forth between 3'' and 2.5'' piping from the turbo back.
 
balanced forged internals/ EMS/ Walbro/ J&S/ DOC B racing oil pump/ DIFF/ Trust me, this will give you reliable power. I rolled around last year at 270 with just the haltech, this time around the J&S is going in. Shooting for 330+ daily.
Don't skimp please, its not going to help. If you really love this platform then get ready to spend some extra $$. Take a look around at the extensively built proteges on the site and you'll see the neccesary parts needed for the build process.
 
THe afc is pretty awesome for price. I had the version I on 12psi stock turbo tuned and drove it that way for nearly 30,000 miles. Never popped the motor. Stock pistons were smooth. Got pictures(stoned).
I don't have any experience on the latest ss afc but it sounds pretty decent to me.
 
I hear the SS with timing control has issues with the MSP. Not sure since I'm running the one without timing control.
Personally if I had to do it again, I would go with the AEM unit instead. I think now that more guys have installed it and worked out the kinks, it's going to start showing some promising results. Plus it has more options as far as tuning goes.
 
when i get back and have every thing setup ill post up the results. i have a 250whp plan and we'll see how it goes.
 
some of what people are saying in here is true - if youre serious about the MSP platform, you need to SERIOUSLY pay to play. getting to 200whp isnt hard, even 220, but when you start looking at 230+ it gets VERY expensive VERY fast unless youre very confident in what youre doing.

220 whp: ~$1100
250 whp: ~$2500
300whp: ~$9000
400whp: ~$12000

no joke. consider your goals carefully.
